pillars

if i remove my pillars to repair them can i go without them for a while or does removing them expose stuff that should not be exposed to stuff like rain.

I took mine off to be pained and it ended up raining like hell. I thought the rain would get in for sure but there was none. Dont know if I was lucky but no rain water came into the car.
