p0740 economy solution

I traded my buddy a 4wheeler n 850 (we have not completed the deal yet no paperwork done) for a 2000 TL with 119,700 miles. It is kind of a beater rust scratches on the hood a dent in the rear trunk some paint blemishes ect,but after I washed it,from 20 ft away it looks nice.Interior looks great, after I drove it a bit I realized that I really enjoy this car.Problem is its throwing the dreaded p0740 code.My initial thoughts were to give the car back and not do the deal, hard to do once you drive these TL`s. So now after reading tons of posts on this awesome site, someone said to another poster just put an 06 trans in like he did.I found a used 06 trans for 1099 which would make it feasible to keep the car.How do I know this is an 06 trans and not an older timebomb.I can`t justify spending big bucks on a trans for a car that does not have a clean body. What should I do?

Does the trans slip when stomped to full throttle at 25-35 mph,, getting on freeway?
hows the atf look and smell?

the trans have a VIN plate on them that matched the cars VIN,
that will decode to the car type and date it was made

Junkyards--excuse me- auto recyclers, will know what to look for and can educate you

A key to your car: was the 105kmile timing belt water pump job done? probably not.
meaning if you diy its going to be 500 in parts- with the extras this car is sure to need.
at a shop thats 1500+ for the job

My advice- its not great deal in current condition
void the deal and keep a friend
Or spend spend spend and hate that person forever for selling you this pos
Yes they are fun to drive, and expensive stuff is around the mileage you are looking at

rent a toy car from hertz to satisfy that need for speed,,they rent shelby mustangs again!

Can stomp on it from most any speed and no slipping. In fact before I found this awesome website,I had no idea about the issue and manually shifted the crap outta the car through a fun twisty backroad section.I just checked the fluid as you suggested. When I first pulled out the stick I saw some fluid on it.But after wiping it off and putting it back in for a check no fluid at all showing on the stick wholly crap. The stick smelled somewhat of a burnt smell but I have smelled worse for sure (maybe cause not much fluid on there).Maybe the code is showing because of low bought fluid.I bought import fluid from pep boys but never changed it cause I read on here to only use the accura fluid. What do you think when these trans start to go bad do they leak fluid,it still shifts fine.

they leak if an axle seal has failed

dont use offbrand fluid--go get honda DW-1 and make sure you are cking at 15 minutes casual freeway drive- from cold- then ck level with engine off- in park
needs to be BETWEEN the 2 dots,,not at either--between
