2001 TL with 185k, it has an obvious engine oil leak from between the engine and trans. Am I correct in assuming that it would be the "rear main seal"? Has anyone else had this problem? What did it cost to be fixed? Please help I need my old reliable back. Thanks

 

first you need to remove the inspection panel under the car
Look inside and see if its coming from the trans- reddish fluid
OR the engine rear main seal- engine oil

Either way its critical you get it fixed
Requires removal of tranmission- about 4 hours for a good tech and a 10$ part

 

I have already removed the inspection cover and it is engine oil. The part is about $17 dollars at the local auto parts store. I am a certified GM tech. I simply wanted other experiances since this is not a car i work on every day. There is a reason that I work for GM but drive a Forgin car, it rarely needs worked on thats what i love about it.

 

It's like any other front wheel drive car- just rip it out- pop in a new seal- slap the trans back in and done

It requires the trans to come out, about a 4-5 hr job complete turn around on the TL. A few have had the problem. Most notably on then 03s
