Need help diagnosing a smell problem

Today at 2:00 Am the wife was on the way to the airport to work. She was rerouted due to construction. After a mile on city streets she noted a really rank odor in the car. She thought it was the neighborhood. But after several blocks she noted it again. She stopped and looked the vehicle over, no smoke or flames. At any rate, she was afraid to continue driving so a tow truck was called.

When It arrived home, I checked for trouble codes via OBDll , none logged. Started car and it ran fine. No appearant problems. Now, she told me she shut the radio off to listen for engine/car sounds. When I turned the radio on, it was locked out on "enter code". I entered the code and the radio worked but only on the large base (I assume) speaker in the center of rear window. If the towing company had for any reason, disconnected the battery, the seat memory would have been lost as well as the time on clock. I think anyway.

Could the smell have come from the sound system (Bose 6 CD, etc) and would the system lock out if overloaded. Next question, if it did, am I looking at speakers or the CD.

Thanks for looking,
Referman

My guess would be a burnt wire from the sound system.

Handycapt
thanks for the reply. I assume you mean a wire or group of wires headed to the speakers.

^ Yup, that's what I meant.

And obviously I'd check the door speakers first, since the rear speaker works.

What kind of odor- electrical burning odor, or maybe rotten egg smell? Rotten egg smell can indicate a failed battery and/or one being overcharged.

I would first check the radio. If you dont have the door speakers working id guess the radio is the problem.

What about the amp. would that cause all speakers to quit with the exception of the Big boy in the center of rear deck?

i believe theres 2 amps one for the speakers and one for the sub. maybe the one for the speakers burnt out and the odor came through the center vents above the climate control.

Looking at a parts blow up. It appears that there is an "equalizer" up front and an amp in the rear. I assume that could have burned up. So I am now looking at the possibility of cd unit and/or equalizer or maybe even wires.
I guess its time to start looking into it. If I can't smell the problem I am lost. I have no knowledge of sound systems and how to test.
