metal on metal

I'm at 132K, with all the regular service done and no know issues prior that might cause this.

I recently replaced the rotors/pads, tranny fluid and replaced the front (of motor) engine mount.

I now hear, only while accelerating a high pitch whine. I first thought it was a belt/pulley but I cannot not duplicate it while stopped. Sounds like a bad bearing, like a metal on metal whine.

The noise only happens while accelerating, while at a steady speed there is no whine. It's most noticeable around 4K just before vtec.

Thoughts?

I'm not certain it's tranny.

I did another run, car was all warmed up. Drove it hard and no noise. So it seems intermittent. It's not a/c because that wasn't on, climate control was off.

PM 014ttl or whatever. But im pretty sure high pitched whines= sign of tranny failure.

Along with metal scraping sound= tranny failure. Search.

if only on accel, im leaning towards the axles, but thats not common for it to whine.

my left rear wheel bearing had a weird growling humming noise at 40-60 only and was not a common wheel bearing noise, but ended up changing it and fixed the prob. so it doesnt have to have the same characteristics as a common issue (which a wheel bearing will constant hum at all ranges, mine didnt) can u narrow it down to what side of the car? front back or side to side?

Since it's only experienced under accelleration it doesn't seem to be the brakes.

Yes, I did put the back the shims on the brackets.

I should mention I just did some 60-0 stops and everything sounds fine from the brakes afterward. This high pitch whine was not heard from the car this morning.

My wife heard it so I know I'm not crazy... well about this sound.

Lol, alright.

I'm just saying that when accelerating its usually the transmission that causes a whine. Usually comes from the right wheel well. Does it happen when you decelerate aswell?

If it whines when turning its the ball bearings. Or power steering pump. Check fluid

Brakes dont make a whiney noise. they fucking squeal

wow im not even gonna bother.

since it didnt do it anymore i would say forget it, could be that the pads and rotors so new, needed lil time to bed it, to get the coatings off.

Yeah don't bother.

One thing I did notice was while on cruise at 70mph last weekend I saw a little flux in my rpms. They were holding steady about 2K and they went up/dwon slightly about 50-100rpm each way. That went away about 2 miles down the road.

I didn't think of it until this morning. I guess the best thing is to keep an eye on it until I have regular issues.

Just an update, it seems that when the throttle is more then half way down I will get the noise.

Thoughts?

Could be the power steering or water pump's internal bearing giving out. At cruising speeds with lower RPM it'd be quieter and under acceleration with higher RPM's you'ld really start to notice it. Just throwing a possibility out there

and GTFO Slushy, he's just making a suggestion, right or wrong.

thats weird, if u put it in park and rev it up on the TB, do u hear it? if not only load, then its something with the powerflow from tranny to axles...or can be speed. but since u said earlier its only acceleration, its torque related......bearings are most speed related, but not always.

I change this statement. I can now hear it if I rev the car really hard, it whines right around 4K.

Car was sitting all afternoon around 85F. Started it up and with a/c off reved the motor really hard. Almost hitting 5.5K.

It doesn't sound like a belt, maybe a bearing going on the alternator?

While revving, create some load on the alternator, power steering, A/C, seperately to see if the noise changes. Maybe you can isolate it that way.

Another crazy way is to get the frequency of the noise, with maybe an oscilloscope tied to a mic. Then figure which bearning (alternator/ power steering/ water pump/ A/c) might be spinning at said frequency.

Also to make sure it's not any kind of belt slippage, spray some belt conditioner on them.

Buy the sears mechanics stethscope and just use that to locate the noise. Might be a little scary placing that on rotating parts but that might be the easiest way.
