Whether they are worn out or not, they are still going to keep operating. That's why it's important to check the pads once in a while.

.......... Why wouldnt the rears work when you brake? thats what they are there for, is to help slow you down
The only way you could possibly stop the brakes in the rear would be to install line lock system or pinch the lines.....so yes...the rear brakes typically do about 20-30% of your braking power....so your thinking the front brakes doing most of the work is semi correct...but the rears definately still operate too, unless prevented from doing so somehow. What it sounds like you are hearing is the brake pad backings rubbing on your rotors...which is not a good thing....cause then you are looking at pads and rotors both, unless they can turn the damage out, which will depend on the thickness of the rotor, if its been turned before, ect. Often times....depending upon what type of rotor you have, its spent by that point! Just my opinion though...
Note....if you catch it early enough....it may just be the rivets that often are incorporated into the pads rubbing....and if you get right on it...might be able to salvage rotor?

If it's a screeching metal on metal sound. I had it too. Happened only in reverse. I thought it was something awful. Turned out to be brake pads. If you haven't replaced them in a while, that's where'd start.

MichaelBenz could be right, you've simply worn out your pads. They will make that noise before the brakes wear out completly, it is an indicaotr you need new brake pads, your rotors are probably fine unless you are getting vibration during stopping.
Another possibility is there is something between your pad and the rotor, could be a rock, but the possibilities of a rock staying that long in there (usually works itself out) in combination with it happening to both rear wheels, leads me to think it would be the pad indicators.

mornings usually when i reverse out i hear the screach. but my pads arent worn out, its most likely yes ur pads are worn out, and its ur shims rubbin against the rotors....jack it up and inspect em..

Warped rotors are generally a sign of undue heat buildup due to driving habits or a bad caliper not releasing fully.
