Lost key now needs to be reprogrammed
Lost key now needs to be reprogrammed
I lost my only key and had to have a new one made and they reprogrammed the key. The locksmith said - once it gets reprogrammed the old one will not work. I paid $135 for the new key - the very next day I found it in my purse!
I can't belive it!
So now I have a key that does not work and wanted to know if I can reprogram the key myself. I called the same locksmith that made me the key and he said he charges $85.00 plus tax to just reprogram the key. I called Acrua they charge $115.00. So here I have a key that can unlock the doors but it wont start the car.
Is there any way to get my 2002 Acura TL old key reprogrammed? Thanks for any help!

go in person to the acura dealer parts dept see what they can do- thats who reprograms
never believe the phone person price!!
the locksmith you used should make a deal if you are bringing the car and both keys to them,,call around...tell other locksmith whats happened--they love to get competitor business,,, then rub in it later...
hey rememebr that TL key job....thanks for the money haha

What you need
1...your new key
2...a MASTER KEY (a key that works)already programmed to car.
to program the transponder- (thats the immobilizer part)
sitting in dr. seat, put the master key in ignition, and turn to on.engine OFF. press the gas pedal 5 times to floor and release. now press brake 6 times (press and release)
remove master key from ignition. install new key and turn to on...engine off. press gas to floor once. now wait. the security light will blink for about 45-60 seconds, then it will go off if you did it correctly. once the light
is off, car should start.

If that is true - how come the dealer and locksmiths say they have to have both keys to program and they have to program them? Are they doing the instructions above and charging people all that money. I want to try it, but then I am afraid I will mess something up with the "computer" they keep talking about. Would you do try it? Do you think it will be okay? I have a key the locksmith made that is now programed to the car - I have the old key - those instructions should work right?

the poster of that is our esteemed moderator who knows his stuff and would not put you or the car in harms way
the dealer/locksmith may have a different method~
same as some year TL radios can be forced to give up their security code!!-
but the dealer will say it has to be removed from the dash to get secret serial number to search for the code--1 hour labor and few screws dropping from the dash later

Thanks again...
I did try it but it did not work. Well, my boyfriend tried it. Would there be a problem if the key that is getting programmed is the OLD key I lost? I will try again today when I get home he has the key with him in case I lock myself out. He did put the key in (the one that is new and was just programmed to the car) did the steps - I believe he was to just turn to key to the "on" position where the lights light up but you are not starting the car. Then he steped on the gas the right amount of times - the brake the right amount of times and then put in the key (OLD key I had lost) and put it in and put the car to the "on" position and pressed on the gas and let go. (Was he supposed to hold the gas petal down until the 45-60 seconds?) Then a green light flashed but it kept flashing and never stopped so we took out the key. The car did not start since the green light didn't stop on its own. Does it only work with those FOB keys and not the old original key?
Another question if I may - If I get on line, by one of those keys for my 2000 Acrua and have it made at Homedepot. Then do the instructions that are on this site - then it should work right?

DOES THE PART AT THE END - "press gas to floor once. now wait."
Does that mean to keep your foot DOWN pressed on the gas pedal until the 45-60 seconds are up and the green key light turns off?
Is the "security light the blinking green key symbol that lights up?
THANKS! Sorry for all the questions but I want this to work for me! I hate the Dealership and Locksmith taking advantage of me just because I don't know this.

I copied that from DIY on the CL side. While our cars are the same it should work if that was actually the way to do it. I never tried it. The dealer shouldnt charge that much, that is a ripoff. I had the local honda dealer program the keys to a new computer for 35 bucks, and it took them 15 min to do it.
