Losing Power while TCS turns off
Losing Power while TCS turns off
Hi all,
Not a car guy but need some opinions here. Tried scouring the forums for similar threads but didn't find a case that was as specific as mine.
Drive a 2000 3.2 TL with over 175k km on it and over the past year or so it's has been problem after problem.
The latest issue has been the power cutting out while driving. It has been happening mostly when the car loses traction and the TCS light comes on, i.e. when accelerating on icy roads.
Once the car regains traction, the power returns and the 'Maintenance Required' light comes on temporarily and goes away.
I found other threads that mentioned that this was an ignition switch issue, and indeed I just had my ignition switch replaced over a month ago. My key wouldn't turn at all and I had to get towed.
However I had experienced this problem before the ignition switch was replaced and now it's been happening even more frequently (when losing traction on icy roads) - a little scary.
I read some other discussions about this being possibly a faulty main relay problem or an immobilizer problem. I did get a remote start installed around a year ago so I'm wondering if that's related.
Any thoughts are welcome, thanks.

It appears to be somewhat of a coincidence that the problems started happening after having the remote start installed.......may want to consider having the shop check their wiring work again. Any CEL codes ?
This sounds to me like ignition switch. Did the shop use an original replacement ignition switch ? or Like 3.2tlc mentioned about the wiring.
When remote starting system is installed I believe the immobilizer is bypassed.

Yeah, sorta confused with the way the problem was described.Does it only occur when the TCS comes on ? ......and the power returns shortly afterwards ?
Im abit confused as well, He does mention while driving and while it looses traction it cuts power, I guess he means the engine turns off.
Plus the Maintenance Rq. light usually pops up when you restart the engine or first turn it on, Thats what led me to say ignition switch.

He said the key would not turn- as reason for switch replacement
That's not a problem we have normally
Anyone else think they replaced the front part and not the much needed rear half where the electrical connections take place??
symptoms are near classic for ign switch electrical- back failure
OP what year= a 99 is for sure got that problem!!
and have shop re-ck remote start- those can give the TL fits
as noted before also look at main relay

the TCS is designed to add brake via ABS action- to a drive wheel that is spinning faster than the other- when car is below 16mph/25kph
To help you get started up an icy hill
good drivers should not require it on a regular basis!
later years may have added a power reduction mode if the spinning is extreme- I do not know about that for sure,
my 01 occasionally does apply TCS brake when leaving stop-- while crossing an oily, wet, and painted line from a full stop. it happens, I lift off throttle and proceed
Most Everyone should leave the TCS control alone- light OFF means system is armed and ready, if you push the switch and light comes ON- system disabled !!
