Intermittent Starting Problem

'03 TL, 108K miles.
Car starts and runs fine, occasional rough idle but nothing too noticeable. Out and about all day last week and when I went to start the car it just cranked but wouldn't start. Two year old battery and it was cranking strong so I don't think that is the issue. No noise that I would say is typical of a bad starter. Anyway, waited about 15 minutes and it started up fine, but idled very rough for a few minutes and then smoothed out and ran normally. I'm thinking the rough idle was from the engine flooding a bit from trying to start it.
Fast forward to yesterday and the exact same thing happened. Brought the car to my mechanic who couldn't find anything and admitted to being stumped. Anyone with any ideas on this?
Thank you.
