Immobilizer issue
For a while my TL has has issues starting, I've noticed that the Immobilizer light decides not to come on sometimes. A whack of the steering wheel will trigger the light and the car will crank no problem. I assume the unit is under the steering wheel cover? Does anyone know how to replace the unit or what it entails? Can I simply swap i out or do i need to have it reprogrammed etc. It's become more frequent lately and I may be stuck soon! Thanks

Yes, you can replace just the immobilizer unit. Its very easy. When you say a whack of the column it cranks just fine, before that does it crank or no?

thanks. It tries to start but just wont turn over completely. the green immobilizer light is not visible whenever this occurs. If i leave the key in the on position and hit the wheel the light comes on and the car starts normally. Do I just replace the small black box and ring around the key hole? I assume it's just failing for some reason....or can the actual chip in the key wear out?

well, I replaced the immobilizer unit and the problem is still there. It seems to happen more on a hot day. Smack the wheel and the car starts fine...any other ideas? I noticed the SRS light does not come on sometimes as well when the immobilizer light doesn't illuminate.

It turned out to be a bad connection on the main relay/ fuel pump relay under the dash. I swapped relays and no longer have an issue in case this problem arises for someone else.
