TLDR: How do you install an oil filter holder that doesn't have a hex shape in the middle to fit a socket?
I was changing the oil in my '00 TL and appear to have over-tightened the oil filter because it continually spun like a screw into drywall with no stud. Believing I stripped the threads, I ordered part 21 from here: acuraoemparts oil pump/strainer. Most oil filter holders I've seen have a hex shape in the middle that you can fit a socket onto, but this one does not. Not knowing how to install it, i wrapped it in a cloth and used channel locks to tighten it in. Well that completely demolished the threads. I ordered a replacement piece, but still have no idea how to install. Are there any tricks to this or do i need special tool? At a loss here =/
thoiboi, as usual, has the best answer. I'm wondering, however, if the hardware stores are closed and you really need to put in the filter immediately, you could hand tighten the filter to the holder FIRST, then screw the entire thing into the valve assembly. By tightening the oil filter (I like to use those handles with a rubber strap), it'll also tighten the filter holder to the assembly. Likely when you unscrew it later, the holder will come out with the filter, though. Crazy, or would it work?
