How do I wire up my fog lights?
How do I wire up my fog lights?
I just completed a 02-03 conversion on my 99 Tl-p. I dont know how to wire up my fog lights. Right now all I have are the bulbs in there and no connection to them. Do I buy a fog light wiring kit from the dealer or where should I go from here? Thanks anyone....
You don't even have to go to the dealer. You can buy a foglight wiring kit at Wal-Mart, yes, Wal-mart, and probably save yourself a lot of dough. They are not that hard and come with instructions. I don't know if N.Y. has laws against directly wiring them to your headlights. What I would do, to be on the safe side, is make sure your wiring kit comes with a relay. You will want to connect your secondary feed to your low beam lights (once again I don't know N.Y. laws, but usually the fog lights are supposed to turn off when your high beams come on, at least in PA and VA). In those 2 states, your car will not pass inspection if they are not connected right. Of course, your main feed will be connected to your battery. If you have an Autozone or other decent auto parts store, they will be able to help. Unfortunately, right now I am deployed to Iraq and cannot run out to my Integra to look to make sure I am telling you the right way. But like I said, they do come with instructions and the ones at Wal-Mart work. I have used them before with no problems. Just make sure that the switch that you use does not completely light up. Sometimes these kits come with a light that may look cool when lit, but they get very hot. The switch itself tends to overheat and can melt. Then of course your lights may not turn off or on at all. They may look good and they do come in different colors, but they are not necessarily safe. I recommend a toggle or rocker switch that maybe lights up a little or not at all. Make sure your switch also has a grounding prong as well. All of your electrical components to this wiring kit should be grounded, such as the switch, the relay and the lights. Ground as close to the component as possible, and to the framework of the car. There should be some metal framing under the dash that you can use for the switch. And of course, make sure that you disconnect the battery first. If I can be of any more assistance, let me know. BTW, DIY projects are always more fun because not only are you saving money, but you are learning in the process. Just be careful. It is electricity.
Thank you very much for your help. I didn't know that I could use a wiring kit from Wal-Mart, I will go there today and look about that. I will definetly purchase a toggle switch instead of the ones that come with the kit. If I have any questions about the install can I pm you?
I do not have a problem helping you out at all, but be forwarned, it may take a while for me to respond. As I said before, I am in Iraq. If anyone gets shot, seriously hurt or killed, they shut down the internet and phones because they do want anyone sending the wrong information to the family or getting the information form the wrong sources. If you want to pm me, that is fine, but remember that I don't have my Integra here to look at. I put my own fog lights on it, but sometimes, before I tell someone something, I like to reconfirm by looking at the Integra as an example just to make sure that I am correct in what I am saying.
