WTF?! Please you PRO's to help diagnose!

WTF?! Please ou PRO's to help diagnose!

Was driving home today in my 2002 TLS and all of a sudden my transmission began slipping like a little b*tch. Car went all the way to 4th for no reason and then slipped totally out and my rpm's revved up with no resistance. Check engine light went on and the exclamation mark light went on. Strangely my ambient temperature all of a sudden read 100F (when it's more like 75F outside). So I took control of the clutch (triptronic) and could barely control it and was able limp down the road for about 2 miles.

So I know about the horrible tranny problems with out cars. So of course I figured I was another victim. Pulled over and got out and walked around and cursed for a while. Got back in and "poof" my tranny was working like nothing had happened. The lights on the dash had gone away (except the check engine). Drove home about 2 miles and there were no issues at all!?! What the F is up with that?

Called my buddy (mechanic) and he thought it could be a problem with the computer mis-firing the solenoids. Might that explain the high ambient temp (computer malfunction)? Can your tranny fail and regain control? I was under the impression that when it fails it fails for good. Also, I haven't changed the Tranny filter in 40K miles (i know i know). My buddy thought it might be that as well.

Input would be great guys as this is a strange case. Thanks

thats pretty weird when my tranny started to go all it did was slip a lil, its most noticeable if your tranny is goin to hell while in SS mode. When I shifted it slipped and took a few seconds to engage. if you're under warranty take it in, better safe than stranded in the middle of the night.

Your tranny is on it's way out. Get it in soon, while you can still drive it. My 01 TL showed symptoms like you described, but as I was on my way to the dealer - it said I barely made it in. Good luck with your tranny.

Of course like an idiot I purchased my TLS as a salvage title b/c it was inspected by my local acura dealership and passes all the tests. It was professionaly rebuilt by a team of guys in Seattle who do this regularly and I'm still happy with the car (after a year) b/c it's in 100% perfect condition and has given me nothing but pleasure besides this.

I'm still convinced this has nothing to do with the salvage part as all TLS's are having this problem if it is infact the tranny. How can I get acura to come good on the 100K warranty (mine has 81K miles)? Is it possible to talk acura into hooking me up? I've been an acura driver for over 10 years now. I've heard of Acura bending the rules for certain individuals (100K+, rebuilt titles, etc). Thanks

unless you bought the 100k extended warranty during your purchase, acura ain't gonna break you off nutthin.... they could care less even if you've been driving acuras since the first acura they shipped here they're not gonna hook anyone up wit a service and parts that cost about $3200 you've got to have some kinda hook ups or kiss the right asses or cry or sumthin lol....your only hope is to check if your car was part of the recall and if you're still entitled to it....hav the dealer look it up wouldn't hurt any

You are assed out, they wont step up with a salvaged title. If youre lucky they are in a good mood and help you out, but dont count on it.

I'm not too sure about this. I believe Acura sent out a notice to ALL TL owners of 00 - 02 models, extending the transmission warranty to 100K miles. My Tranny went at 103K, and Acura STLL picked up the new tranny under warranty. That's one of the reasons I bought another Acura.

Pearlwhite - Don't give up hope. But remember - it's easier to catch a bee with honey, than it is with vinegar.

So i'm taking it into my local dealership tomorrow so i'll let you know how things pan out.

Strange enough the guy at the dealership over the phone said that the prob sounds more like an electrical issue rather than a tranny issue. So let's hope

PS - there is a local independent acura shop in my neighborhood. Do you think i should look into getting my tranny replaced there if it comes to that? I know it would prob be a few thousand cheaper. What would you guys suggest?

PSS - i also have a friend who works in a junk yard and can get used trannies with less than 20K miles for real cheap. What do yall think about that as an option? I'm just seeking all the options so I can choose the best.

Thanks guys

I've got 81K miles on my current tranny. But the car has a salvaged title so I'm not sure if Acura will stepup and help this guy out. Off to the dealership. Let you know how things turn out.

Salvaged title = no warranty

They will do the TSBs for you, but no way they're gonna cover the tranny replacement.

Good luck dude.

It's funny how people with salvaged titles wonder why they aren't covered.

The reason you paid so little for your car is because you relinquish your rights for any warranty repairs to be covered.

I knew what I was getting into when I purchased a salvage title. Just got back from the dealer and he said there was as 50% chance acura would help me out with the replacement costs. I will find out the final word at 4PM today.

However on the salvage issue I think it's a good way to go. If it's done right the car works just like a new one. Plus I purchased my car with 65K miles, so the only warranty that I lost was the tranny one. Of course, as fate would have it, my tranny failed.

Aftermarket (aamco ect..) tranny places will be about 1/2 the price for a rebuilt tranny. I would look into them over oem for price savings
