Horrible gas Mileage...Read this

OK. I got a 2000 TL. She has been very good to me and I want to keep her forever. No problems really. Had a transmission replaced about 10 years ago but other than that, just regular maintenance stuff.

This is whats killing me. I noticed that my car is just drinking gas. I know she is 14 years old but come on, the gas is killing. So I decided to do a calculation of my MPG. I getting 23 mpg. Is that normal? What do you guys get?

I want to do some research and see how I can improve my gas mileage. What do you recommend. Plugs? Air Filter? PCV Valve? Sea Foam? Injector flush. How can I improve my gas mileage

I just bought mine a few weeks ago, was averaging about 17-18mpg. I have since did a drop in K&N, plugs, PVC and just ordered a set of headers to allow the engine to breathe better (mainly all city driving, btw). I have already seen an improvement to about 23-24mpg. When I do the oil change (was just done when I bought it) I will Seafoam as well and clean the EGR. I anticipate maybe 25mpg city, as I keep my foot light most of the time. Not dogging it while driving and shutting the engine down when sitting for more than 10 seconds will also increase your mpg. Check your tire pressure as well, most people overlook that, but it has a LOT to do with your fuel economy, as well as a good alignment. (basically a poor alignment is like dragging your tires instead of them rolling, increasing your friction).

That EGR suggestion sounds good too. How about O2 sensors? I don't have any codes but can they still be killing my mpg. Come to think about it, I have never changed my O2 sensors on this car. Maybe that can be my next project. I have never gotten codes for them....hmmm

bad sensor will throw a code
seafoam thru gas 2 times, at 1 can to half tank, will clean everything
new NGK Iridium or Platinum 8 bucks each- accept no others
23 in town is awesome! even as an average combined its good

remove intake manifold and clean TB and iACV plus egr passages and ports in manifold, new pcv for safety, adjust valves if well past 100kmiles
let car shift about 2500 in town..no you cant outthink the ecu~

32 psi is way too low tire pressure
ck allowed max cold then use 80% of that pressure
example 50 max cold, run 40 psi
exception- if its 100 degrees where you live, try ~36psi- pavement is 135+ degrees and will overheat tires in certain extreme situations

01tl4tl. Its funny you say that because I just looked up the gas mileage for 2000 TL and it says 19 city/ 29 highway. I guess those are the original stats from Acura back in the day. Edmunds says its 17/27.

Maybe I need to park this car and start driving my AVEO. Maybe I have gotten used to driving my 4 cyclinder too much. I am going to do make a project out of this. I really want to see if I can improve my gas mileage.

What percentage driving do you do between highway and city? 23mpg doesn`t sound half bad.

^^ 23mpg for 95% City is really good!!! for a 14yr old V6...

Acura Stated something like 19mpg city and 29hwy before the new "Official Test" drop it to 17-27mpgs which is BS..
I'm consistently getting 23-24city//30-31hwy..

Don't be haha anyone coming from a 4 Cyl car will think the TL is a gas guzzler.
IIRC the 2G TL is by far the most economic TL ever < Not running the official stats but rather User Feedback..

those extra 2 cylinders don't shut off in town like a modern car
its always drinking fuel,,how much can be improved with the standard maintenance items, all mentioned above
that egr system cleaning of manifold is important TB service, valve adjust, tire pressures, air filter, seafoam blahblahblah

Replace your old clogged catalytic converter and drive like granpa that should help your fuel consumption.
