Headlight works half the time?

My 00TL driver side headlight(hid light) works on and off. Day light and long beams work perfectly. The car is in really good condition! So my light sometimes goes off or on for no reason. Sometimes i turn on my car, flick the lights on and both work for 5 sec then the driver side goes out, or the opposite happens too. If both are on and i close the hood the driver light goes off. I hope its not a big problem. Any hints/tips on what i should do?

How old is the car, and have you ever changed the lights before? Your lights may be going out. Could be the ballast but if the bulbs are very old I would start there. If it was only one side having issues you could swap the bulbs and see if the issue moves to the other side.

If the color temp of the lights are changing (more purplish) they are definitely going bad.

Its only the one side, its a 00 TL. I dont think lights have ever een changed. They are never purpllish but is it normal for them to be blue then turn to a more white after a minute or so? I think my best bet is to swap the bulbs then go from there!

Oh OK I misread your post. Yeah you can swap them, it's kind of a pain because you have to take the bumper off. But at least you'll know. Have you had the car since new (i.e. could the previous owner have changed the lights)? If they are original then it's almost a sure bet they are going bad.

And yes, it's normal to look different/dimmer while warming up.

Good luck!

Why will i have to take the bumper off? I once tried getting to the light and did(taking out battery and air filter intake) but i didnt have the special key for the hid cover! Where does the bumper come into play? I see the passenger side is easirr to get too!

Im the second owner, the car only had 108000 kilometers when i bought it 5 months ago!

I had a headlight issue and it took me weeks of reading forums online to figure it out. Get a cheap multi-meter and test the continuity of the wiring to your headlights first. My guess is that the ballast needs to be replaced due to water damage.

After getting a ballast from the junkyard and putting it in it still didnt work but after swaping the fuses i figured out it was a bad fuse! I dont get how a bad fuse would cuz the light to work half the time or flicker, anyways lights worked all day today!
