Hard Misfire Issue - Dreaded p1399, P300-306
Guys,
I need some help. I've been chasing after this issue for a while now. Here are the steps I have taken so far:
Then the misfire came back. I checked the plugs and coils again and they were good. From my reading on here, it seemed like injectors could be the issue. But before pulling the plenum off, I had a reputable Honda shop take a look. They ran through their diagnosis, said all was fine without taking the plenum off. Their next step was to pull and replace the injectors. I did that myself and sent them to a shop to be cleaned. Popped them back in and the car ran beautifully. Fast forward to about a month or two of driving of driving and the misfire is back, and its pretty bad. So, I pulled the plugs again. This time, the plugs in cyl 2 and 5 were loose (shop was the last place to handle plugs). I pulled all the plugs and the ones in 2 and 5 were in pretty rough shape. Lots of carbon on cyl 2 and lots of carbon and a little bit of wet oil on cyl 5.

I'll be replacing at least those 2 plugs. But before taking further steps on my own, I wanted to get your insight. Any help is appreciated.
Thanks,
Mike
I need some help. I've been chasing after this issue for a while now. Here are the steps I have taken so far:
- Cleaned EGR Ports
- checked spark plugs (ok)
- Coil pack test and changed 1. Fixed the issue.

^ agree. unplugging them one at a time to see if the idle changes really only works if one is completely failed. Rent a compression tester, test the compression on each cyl and see if they all are within spec. If so move on to replacing coils.

I agree with Kris- ck the compression 1st, dry then wet (a squirt of oil into cyl then crank engine a few revolutions to spread-then TEST.
If compression is better on 2nd test it has bad rings...the oil created an extra seal. If rings are good numbers stay the same.
and the valves are suspect
you mentioned (in PM) about cleaned egr ports- I want to verify that you cleaned the main passage inside manifold from one end to the other--from the 2 holes under the egr valve to the large opening at driver end of manifold using carb cleaner and wire coat hanger.
Also lube the arm for the egr valve itself
was the TB removed from the intake during cleaning? or was it flipped upside down and around during the process, Exactly how did you clean the egr system?
Did you take the cover off iacv on bottom of TB unit and remove it to clean?
you verified the upper-most gasket went back on right side up? can be installed flipped and cause running problems
but start with compression, determine if thats off and if oil helps it
Dont rebuild a TL engine - grab a used one and install tbelt kit and wp etc- be good for another 200kmiles
200 is actually nothing compared to what some members got from their engine
our mega-moderator fsttyms1 had 300kmiles on his 00 when he pulled it for a cl-s engine and 6 speed manual trans,
Tore the engine down for inspection and cylinder walls still had honing marks- barely broken in at 300,000 Miles!
Keep the oil changed and the wp/tbelt done every 100kmiles for years of enjoyment
Note for the picky: Not all suggestions in this post are directly related to OP- but others in the future may glean something to help them
Also- I didnt watch his vids

I will be doing the compression test today or tomorrow evening (5/23-5/24).

Plenum was pulled off completely and cleaned with tons of carb cleaner and a coat hanger at all open ports.

TB was removed and I replaced the IACV because mine had failed. I tried cleaning it before replacing. Grabbed one from an Odyssey (same part) for $5. Also, TB gasket was changed at this time.

It was put on right side up. Easy to see the veins from the top plenum cover to verify that.

I won't be rebuilding this engine. If it fails compression, I'm selling it for super cheap on CL. I'll report back soon.

Also, transmission needs replacement. If the engine passes compression I will be grabbing a tranny from a pick and pull and replacing.
I've already purchased a new vehicle. The goal here is to get this car back to daily drivable condition to maximize resale.

Now that I think about it, the sediment dissolved almost instantly when I washed that glass. Sugar doesn't dissolve in gasoline, according to snopes.
