Exclamation ?Grinding? Noise When Accelerating.

When i accelerate, no matter the speed, i hear a ?grinding? idk how to explain it really, kinda like a whine but deeper? noise. its really annoying and it worries me and not to mention embarrassing when I'm just cruising to a freaking gas pump to get gas ha ha. when i let off the gas it will stop. new to Acura cars. sorry if im re-posting another thread already discussed, i looked around and didn't find anything though. help is appreciated, thanks!

Hey WJO1994, is the noise coming from the front of the car ? Can you narrow it down to a specific area such as a wheel ? What all have ya done recently to check for the source of this noise ? More info would help !!!!

I want to say its coming from the front of the car. kinda hard to pin point because im always driving when i hear it haha. ill get my buddy rev it in park and see if it does it here soon. will update then. ive had a few friends tell me its a belt? or something i dont know really. im more used to older american muscles so this is all new to me. haha. and i havent really done anything to it really. if i just coast it doesnt do it, but when i press on that nifty gas pedal it does it. i wish i could describe it better. just a semi low growl/grind.

Yeah, the great American muscle cars of yesteryear were much more simple to work on, however the basic general mechanical components are still there ....only controlled differently by technological advances within the automotive industry. Today's cars can run circles around those old beasts.

Check up underhood, while the car is in park and increase the rpms to see if you can replicate the sound. Pay particular attention to the drive belts, pulleys, idler and associated components in the area. After you rule that stuff out, have someone drive the car to simulate the noise, while you listen from either the passenger side or standing outside. My guess would be the idler tensioner.

Update! @3.2TL i layed on the ground and revved it in park with my hand and i believe it is mostly likely coming from my cat !GREAT! -.- or my transmission but i dont think it(the transmission) would be making the noise while in park right? ALSO, while in park it only does the noise for a split second then stops, but when i drive its a continuous thing. didnt know if that info would help you. but yeah, back to the topic at hand... i believe its my cat, so.. any ideas on what to do? im kinda broke so money is a problem. cut it out or replace it? feedback is appreciated, thanks!

The cat needs to be inspected more closely if ya suspect that to be the actual cause of the noise which ya earlier described. If indeed it's the source, exhaust fumes will be obviously leaking from it.

My guess is that either the flex pipe before the cat or the flanged connection exiting from it to the midpipe has come loose. Check it out and check back !

If it's kind of a tinny rattle sound then it could just be loose heat shields.

Did your "pops" check the cat yet ?
It's worth the effort looking at first,IMO. If you and "pops" wanna try a tranny drain & fill, it's easy enough to do. Check the DIY's sticky for info. Basically, no more difficult than an oil change. Just be sure to use Honda DW1 fluid to refill. Is "pops" into reading our site's info ? Help him out !!!! Try petting the sweaty things ! ):

Sorry man, with all due respect of your "Pop's" serving over in Afghanistan. Hope you are keeping his Chevelle in good working order for when he is able to return home.

But for now, safely lift and support the car......check the cat for any signs of leaking, then go ahead and do a drain & fill of the tranny. You want to eliminate other things before assuming that it may be the tranny at this point. Good luck !!!!

Bad wheel bearing. You definitely can get grinding noises, and sometimes clunking noises...

Barryjoe beat me to it...

recently the wifey's Lexus started making a similar noise...

jack your car up and grab the rim/tire at 3 and 9'o clock and give it a wiggle...repeat the process holding the wheel at 12 and 6 o'clock...

if there is play, the wheel bearings are going out...

Just had this issue in my mothers minivan haha.
Bad brake pads and a bad rotor. Inspect it you're self.

I'm inclined to agree with 3.2tl on the flex pipe. I put in 6-2-1 headers on mine, then lowered it and ended up taking the mesh of the flex piped. Needless to say there was more damaged than just the mesh. I haven't ponied up and bought a new set of headers yet. But under constant load sometimes more often than not its most likely to start doing around 2k or if I'm WOT around 4.5k. If I maintain the same rate of excel it makes the noise constantly. For me the sound is some what like a head shield, but the vibration is deeper than what the thin metal from a heat shield would produce. More like if you took a hair clipper buzzer, turned it on and held it against a faucet (I know weird analogy, but for me, that is pretty close to the sound). Try playing with the throttle while you are driving; Kick it down a gear, then back off it and see if you can get it to stop. Usually works for me every time it starts. But that's my best guess.

Fixed for me

I found this thread when I had the same symptoms on my wife’s MDX.

I removed the y pipe underneath and their is a bracket on these motors that connects the bottom of the engine and the rear catalytic converter. The bolt that holds that bracket on had come loose causing it to rattle.

Put some blue locktite on it and its all set now.
