Electrical Fire / Explosion!

In November 2007, a 2003 Honda Accord Sedan exploded in my apartment complex. We thought it was a freak accident or something, but tonight another car exploded.

At 2:30AM a 2000 Acura TL Sedan caught on fire and burned very fast causing major damage to the building.

My concern is that this we basically the SAME car. I spoke to the lady that had the Accord and she said they discovered it was an electrical problem that caused the spark plug to "super heat itself" and started the fire.

The TL looks like the exact same thing happened! The hood was blown back onto the roof just like the Accord...

Has anyone else heard of anything like this? I don't know of any recalls regarding electrical issues, but I don't read on the 2nd gen forums much...Anyone have any experiences with this?

Doesn't Sound Right......

Hi Red :

I'm not a professional tech but, started my career as a mechanic and worked on cars all my life so I think I know a little about cars. Vehicles that are not running simply cannot spontaneously "explode" so I find it hard to believe the TL story. The Accord "super heated" spark plug causing a fire and explosion also is very suspect. Within the engine bay, there is no more than a pint of gas (probably less)when the engine is running and to have one plug ignite that fuel is highly unlikely and would only cause a small fire, not an explosion.

That said, some failures, like a cracked fuel rail, will cause fuel to be pumped all over the engine causing a "feeding" fire situation. However, the engine would need to running for some time (hot) and have something spark or fuel spilling on the exhaust manifold.

Having two cars "explode" in the same area is highly suspect and sounds like you have arsonist operating in your area.

was any aftermarket alarm installed in either cars? usually with someone who has no experience, and does an install like that, can mix up some wires causing an electrical fire...starts from the firewall area and spreads....

there was a guy who owned a civic, and went to bestbuy/futureshop and got a doubledin hooked up, next thing u know the car sparked up and went in flames, causing a 11k damage and a written off civic..

I am very suspect to these as well...The comments about what happened came from the owners and a "super heated spark plug" sound dumb to me too, but that's what they said the cause was.

Either way, both cars had been sitting for over 4 hours when the fires started. They may have started as small fires, but by the time the fire department got there they had burned almost completely.

Maybe fould play, but not really likely...I'm in a real nice area, one car was an old lady and the car today was a young guy...seems more likely to be random electrical fires. Both cars were bone stock as far as I can tell.
