EGR Symptoms?

My TL sometimes sputters and seems like it wants to stall when it's at idle. Giving it some gas usually gets it back to normal.

Could this be a dirty EGR port?

Thanks.

Yes, even a dirty Idle Air Control Valve (IACV). I recommend doing a search for the DIY procedure to clean the EGR ports on the intake manifold. It has 2 pieces you need to take apart, an upper and lower. Also have to remove EGR valve and clean its spindle inside and the port running thru the block into the intake. Very easy job technically, but a little tedious as there is a lot of gunk to clean.

You will also need to remove the throttle body and the IACV and clean them too. All is explained in DIY.

Hey Soria, is your CEL on ? If so, have the codes read by your local auto parts store for free.
That will help narrow down the problem.

If none, try what Victus1 suggested.....lots of info available, if you take a few minutes to search for EGR and TB intake cleaning. The '99 is a bit more problematic and has slightly different EGR passageways, but the same overall issue of getting gunked up with carbon.

Have you tried a good fuel system cleaner recently ? Cooler weather and winter gas formulations can cause issues. Injectors and ignition coils which are on the edge, can cause a lumpy idle also. Some other things to check are the coolant level and electrical system. Inspect the battery along with all component connectors, wiring cables and grounds.

every 75kmiles you need to clean the egr system per diy instructions
fuel cleaner does wonders on injectors etc- suggests Seafoam
it does not get the egr~

expect 2 hours, 3 cans carb cleaner to remove gunk
or take the intake manifold to a machine shop where they have a special tool to ream thru the ports
and a parts washing machine that will make it all spotless like new

I agree on testing battery system etc- free at any parts store or battery place
winter puts the hurt on things

iacv- idle air control -is a part inside throttle body- clean while doing egr job
it tends to stick in its rotation and have clogged air passage = causing idle to go from 1000-1500 and back down repeatedly
