Common HID problem?

I recently returned home from a day out in rainy weather to find out that one of my headlights was out (passenger side). I flicked it on and off a few times but was still out. I went and picked up a new HID bulb and installed it everything seemed to be working fine (except for the intensity and color of the light) until i went back out into crap weather and upon stopping at a stop light I noticed in the reflection of another cars bumper that my passenger side light was out again! I tried flicking the lights on and off a few times and the light came back. But now this is a common thing I have to do every time I turn on the lights. Has anyone else had this issue?

yes, maybe it wasnt a bulb issue.

maybe the ballast or the inverter went bad.
you can test these out by swapping them to the other side. if problem follows; then you know who the culprit is.

p.s. as you learned, you should always replace bulbs in pairs.

Chances are that if ya inspect things closer, the moisture or corrosion within the inverter or ballast is the real problem. Check the connections and grounds.

You can either try to locate some used parts or better yet.....just replace the HID setup with the newer water resistant aftermarket units for less than $100. Try a search and check the "DIY's" for more details.

Me too kinda

My passenger side headlight turns off once in a while and i got to turn the headlights off and on again for it to come back on. Mine has been doing this for at least 8-9 years and i've owned the car for 11 years, i never changed or fixed any headlight parts (i just change out bulbs when they burn out) since it happens only once every month or 2.

My drivers side headlight is doing the same thing randomly cutting out, but turning back on if I turn the headlights off then on again. I have no prior experience with hid's and do not really understand how they work as a system. My question is could someone explain how this system works quickly, and can a hid bulb cause this problem or is this isolated to the ballast, ignitor, or inverter?

Hey Jay0016, a quick simple way to rule out the possibility of a normally failing bulb would be to either swap sides, trying a known good bulb or new one in the problem side. Check component connections for signs of moisture and corrosion as they will play havoc with HID's. Don't touch the bulb. Try searching the "DIY" sticky and the previous threads on "HID"s.
