choosing oil
5-20 or 5-30 The one on sale from a name brand. Usually penz platinum but I also run regular oil sometimes.
The engine doesn't care if you switch around, just don't mix oil brands when adding
Not an issue for us - never have to add oil between changes when you dump in the whole 5 qts!!
seafoam the oil system once a year, just before oil change = that helps more than you know

^ 5W-20 is almost a Scam.. Honda used it to pass the ULEV regulation back in 2001 since it gives you a marginable MPG increase "Supposedly" would be the right word to use because I found no difference at all when I use 5W-30 I still get 30MPG hwy and 24 city on a daily basis.

If you live in constant overnight sub-freezing 32F temps- then a synthetic 0-20 is better for you
The rest of us 5 -30 is fine, and may give marginally better protection to the many parts smashing together at 5000 rpm

Cant go wrong with any full syn. M1 EP or Penz plat with pure plus is another great syn oil that can be had cheap at places like walmart. 5w20 or 5w30 either is fine. Like stated above, the only reason honda (and most every other manufacturer) have switched is to help meet or exceed CAFE standards. You have been told wrong about the engine being particular about it. I have run 40 weight before with zero issues.
manufactures went to a lot of trouble to fool the CAFE Corporate Average Fuel Economy the us govt was mandating
A few years later the govt decided is was all bs and ended the standard!!
right after that acura went back to 5-30
coincidence??

I bought my 2002TL new. I followed the service advisers advice to use conventional oil for the first 15k miles for break-in before switching to synthetic if you wanted. PYB (Pennzoil Yellow Bottle) 5W20 for the first 15k. Then Pennzoil synthetic 5W20 to 85k. Oil change interval (OCI) around 6K. Then PYB 5W20 since. Now at 105k.
Why the change? Honest answers - I don't plan on keeping the car more than another 10 or 15k. These Acura engines can go forever on any oil if you change it out at or before the 7.5K interval. PYB is excellent oil. I'm easy on the car and most miles are coasting at 65mph. The oil always looks clean.
What would I use if I wanted to go beyond 250k (as these cars are now entering). Use a quality synthetic 5W20 or 5W30. Use an OCI between 7.5 and 10k miles. Do that and the regularly scheduled engine maintenance and the wheels will fall off before the engine fails.
