I just bought a 2002 TL the car runs strong but now I have a question… When starting the switch when the lights on the dash turn on except the check engine light.. Im wondering if maybe the light was cancelled of some how modified to not work. My only question about that is that i need to smog it now and if the engine light doesn't work i might need a replace it or something. Any suggestions or thoughts would help thanks for the help in advance..

maybe the bulb behind the check engine light went out.
This will still let you pass emissions/smog.

I dont believe there are any tricks or modifications that cancel out that light. it might simply be a burned out bulb

if you go to an auto parts store, they can hook up an OBDII scanner to check to see if there are any codes that your engine threw. if you have a current code, this will not let you pass emissions/smog until you clear up the light/code/problem.

 

Thanks for the post.. it makes sense now. I mean I figured the car ran like a champ so i purchased it. I will now be more confident taking it to smog..

 

before you take it to smog, ask Autozone to check to see if any check engine codes!!!

this will save you a 2nd trip back to the state inspections/smog in case there is something wrong!!
