center console light bulb

My center console light went out on my 99 TL and I was wondering how to get at it. It's not as simple as popping the cover off and there is a bulb(I have tried). I'm assuming I will have to dismantle a little more and don't want to mar up the console guessing. There has to be a systematic way to get the console apart and I haven't figured it out yet.
Any help would be appreciated.

It is that simple. Pop off trim ring. You will need some sort of mini screwdriver to pop the gear facia plate off. If you look at the sides of the plate there are four small holes. You will need to slowly pry those loose. You will need to screw the shift knob off also. It will be very hard but you can do it.

I don't know if you are talking about getting at the same bulb as I need replaced. It is the one on a 99 that lights up the center console itself and sheds some light into the cup holders.

Its been a long time since i have removed it, but i think you have to remove the 2 wood trim pieces along the center console (lift the console lid and start lifting there) lift up and pull backwards. Once those are removed, remove the screws that hold the rear part of the console and remove the 2 at the bottom of it under the little piece of carpet. Once loose you can slide it back far enough to unhook the connector and get to the light bulb.

Sounds good but before I start are the wood trim pieces on clips? I always thought they were on there with 2-wayu tape and did not want to disturb them.

Thats the correct way to get to that light. The trim pieces are clipped in. start at the back and pull upward. Two screws in the bottom of the console pocket. And the screws along both sides.
