Catastrophic Coil Failure
Catastrophic Coil Failure
I have a ’02 TL-S w/ 140k. I nearly never post since I find most of my answers in the forums. However, I have not been able to find anything on this. I am going back a few months with this to give it some background. The symptoms seem to be so similar that I feel it may be important. Symptom: the car will start to run rough and give me random misfire codes. First time it was a coil, no problem. Second time, it was the cat; still no problem. Third time (two weeks ago) it was another coil and I started getting annoyed. This time, the car started running rough, I ordered the coil and decided to do plugs as well, but I never made it home. She died on me altogether. I had it towed home, since I already had the parts coming. I found the new coil (two weeks old) was melted into the socket! Thus the catastrophic header above. It took five hours to get the thing out of the socket. I replaced that coil and all the plugs, but it will not start. It doesn’t even feel like it’s trying hard. I can’t figure it out. I did a hard reset, removed the battery terminals for a bit, to reset the computer and when that didn’t work came here to find out which fuse I was suppose to pull thinking there may be some residual. Still nothing. The original five codes were Cylinder 1,3,4, and 6 misfire and random misfire. No new codes are appearing... Sorry for the book. Any thoughts?
Turns over fine. I smell fuel in the exhaust, I assume that rules out fuel pump. I just swapped out two of the coils to see what happens. It sounded a little different. I ordered two more coils. Anyone know how to test them. I assume I shouldn't put my tongue to it.

Fuse number 12 iirc- in the passenger footwell area is marked Clock but is really the secret backup power to the ECU - Engine Control Unit- engine computerish something and pulling its power supply will force a reset
Thats what you do when you install a crank pulley and certain other engine related mods so the computer learns the change-

fuse 11 is located in the Driver's dash panel.(says wiring diagram) The fuse is for the coils. Let me look at the wiring diagram to see if there is anything else. Is something clogged in the air filter? did you check for fuel? fuel pump bad?
And the winner is... Fuse # 11!!
Serves me right for assuming all the engine control fuses would be in the engine compartment.
What a dope.
I should have started simpler.
Thanks for the help.
