Car shuts off, needs revs to restart...

I have a 1999 acura TL with about 168k miles on it. Its shutting off randomly and I cant figure out why and neither can the mechanic. Basically what happens is either I am parked and it won't turn over or I'm driving and the car shuts off except for the A/C that keeps blowing. When this happens I pull over and try to restart but the car wont turn over or get out of park. So what i do is i have to press the gas while turning over and get the revs up, then it starts right up. Anyone ever have this problem? Know what I need to fix? There is no check engine light that comes on.

EGR port?

Wait for 01TL4TL's input.
This will be solved by nightfall.

I really hope so. I am weary of bringing it to someone because sometimes it'll go 1-3 months without shutting off. So I don't want to think it's fixed then BAM 3 months later I'm on the side of the road and the 30 day warranty for the fix is done.

Another symptom of this is that the car sometimes feels like it's about to shut off and lurches, ever so slightly, the passenger can't feel it.

Im going to start diagnosis with: its a 99--ignition switch-back failure
acura replaced once under a recall then its on customer next 3-4 times it fails during the cars life

part is under 50$ diy leads you thru replacement https://acurazine.com/forums/2g-tl-1999-2003-98/new-official-2nd-gen-tl-diy-thread-706083/

call acura to see if its ever been done, 1-800 382 2238 x5 usa cars

there may be other prob with it--thats a starting point

to get the trans out of Park in a lock situation: see the small cover on right side of shift lever- remove it
insert the car key in the slot and push down, while pushing the brake pedal.. and move shifter to N
remove key from slot- insert in ignition and go
that system kicks in for several reasons..so we have to work thru them

how old are your spark plugs?

@01
Yes i've replaced the ignition switch and ive had the sparks for about 5 years...too long? lol im terrible with cars. I have noticed i can take the keys out of the car while in drive so maybe i should check it again. I do the key in the hole thing to get it into drive sometimes but i just figured, through trial an error that if i rev te car and get it started I can get it out of Park. Worst part about this crap is its hard to reproduce so i can never show anyone.

if you can remove the key as said - you have a real problem
ignition switch front is bad--and probably the back is shorted,, so it keeps running

they do fail after initial acura replacement- they were using the same crud part!!

plugs are depending on miles, 5 years can be 60-100, then I would throw in new plugs
Cannot figure out how your method gets the car to start at all!! let alone shift

egr ports lead to sluggish running and other probs--need cleaning every 75kmiles,,maybe sooner on single egr port 99s, the later years have 6 ports- takes longer to plug all of them but it does- see the many pics on here

Ah, it's not that bad in there...nothing really new. A couple of members (i.e. Sarlacc, Sly Raskal) are having kids soon...

Otherwise, same old more or less. There is the "billy" thread. You may want to look in the D&R sub-forum.
