Question Car just stopped

Was driving home and about 50 meters from my house when my TL engine power just went away. There was electrical because I tried restarting her and all the lights were working. Engine just stopped, I re-started her for about two times and then engine came back to life. Before dieing again when I got back into the garage.

This morning, I tried to turn the car on. It didn't start, it felt as though there was no fuel getting to engine. All electricals were working so I assume it's nothing to do with battery or electrics. She fired up on the 3rd try and I drove around my block several times with no issues. Car seems to be back to normal. Only thing I notice is the day time running lights (Canadian models have them) going on and off a couple times.

Any idea's what is the cause and fix?

^ My first thought. I'd check the fuel pump as well. Have you ever ran it dry out of gas?

any engine work done recently? how many miles? it could be a bad fuel pump or it could be an inaccurate fuel gauge reading and u have no gas.
first thing id do is put gas in the car just to be sure.
next check the fuel pressure.
keep us posted

No engine work done, only got a oil change down last week at the dealer. Engine is bone stock.

I have a half tank. I filled up half way before going out. Coming back home I just had just below half a tank. It did feel like the car was chocking for fuel. This morning I ran it and drove around. Came back home and turned the car on and it ran fine. My assumption the fuel system may have been clogged so I today I bought a bottle of fuel injector cleaner.

Would a temp change could cause this? We had a temperature change since our temps were pretty mild for Dec, last night it went down below 0 degrees for the first time.

you might have water in the fuel which froze up in one of the lines or something, which basically choked it for fuel, try a bottle of Isopropyl Alcohol (that is all fuel drier is, look at the ingrediants of fuel drier) in your gas tank to help soak up some of the water, and try and get the stuff with the highest % of alcohol in it (local grocery store is proably the cheapest)

Sounds like it could be the ignition switch failing since it's a '99.

Most of the lights went on, but didn't notice the green key go on. Like I mentioned, car seems to be working well now. I put a half a bottle of fuel injector cleaner in the tank. I will drive it to work today and report back here later.

I had my ignition switch fixed when they had that recall. I am going to take it to Acura for a check up. What should I ask for?

ok it happened again last night. I paid more attention to what happened.
This is what happened the first time as well:

Was driving along and I notice the ABS yellow light and 2 other lights go on and off within a second. Then 20 minutes later at a red light. Engine stopped and most of the lights on the dash lit up. I turned car off and then on again. It fired back up once I pressed on the gas pedal. Nothing happened to me the rest of the night. I have no yellow check engine light on my dash and the car is running fine. What the heck is causing this?????

almost sounds like the new one might be failing now, or the pgm-fi relay is crapping out

Sounds like the ignition switch again. They are known to fail even on the recall units. Many have had it happen. You can pick up a new switch and replace it yoruself for like 50 bucks and do it in 30 min or so.

Update

I took it to Acura for a diagnostics which cost me $99 plus taxes. I told them everything that happened. They couldn’t find anything else that could have caused my engine to stop. They found the right rear speed sensor to be faulty which could have stalled the engine since they told me it can trigger the TAC which can cut power to the engine. The cost of the part is $71 and labour is around $100. I will be getting it done this Saturday. I already paid for the part when I paid the for the diagnostics.

I am not mechanical savvy so I am not even going to attempt doing this my self.

, still should not be stalling out if the traction control kicked on,
it will more then likely not fix your problem, cause it basises it off the other rear wheel too, so an average of the two rear wheels, did the ABS light stay on after you had it die out on you>>>

Im with the others, the wheel speed sensor shouldnt have caused your car to do what it did. My guess is the ignition switch. The recalled replacements have been known to fail as well.

The TCS light came on last night while coming home. Then the check engine light came on. The car didn't stall like before. My guess is this the speed sensor that the Acura dealer did find to be going.

When was the last time you had your EGR port cleaned? TCS and Check Engine Light is a sign that I had and I got the code (P0401) which is EGR Insufficient Flow. The EGR port is clogged and sometimes it can affect your car in some ways. Personally I didn't have the symptoms you are having but it try to get the code from that check engine light.

As some said in the thread already, your ignition switch could be going.

I had the same problem today, my tcs and abs came on right after that my car completely died and i was on the highway thank god i was in the left lane, i thought it was my battery terminal because my positive terminal had some corrosion, but after reading this i'm definitely getting a new ignition switch put in.

I have the Acura Instruction sheet on on how to clean the EGR port. Let me know if you need it. I can email you the PDF file of the instructions. (for 1999 only) It's an easy job if your mechanically inclinded. It takes a couple of hours to do and will cost you 2/3 cans of throttle body spray cleaner. About $12. This is just another incredible Acura Dealership rip off.

I think when they changed his Ignition Switch, they put in the same type of faulty ignition switch part #. I changed my ignition switch myself today but got a different part number which ends in 305. I wouldn't be surprised if that fails later on down the line.

I was once on the parkway and all my lights came on the dash and I lost power for a moment. Pulled over turned off then on but my check engine light came on and stayed on. I got the codes checked and it was the EGR. After that first initial power loss I never had it do that again so that might not be your problem if your car keeps shutting off.

Thanks. However I got my dad' mechanic to do it and as well he replaced the Daytime Light relay as well. No more chk engine light or DRL light. I ordered the ignition switch and got it last Friday. I will change it out with the weather gets a bit warmer. But please send me the cleaning instruction for future use. Thanks!

Update: Installed new ignition switch. Used the DIY. It was easy, except for the little cover over the switch. I couldn't get it back on properly so I taped it up with some duct tape to hold it on.
