Ballast problems

Okay since I cant find a ballast for a reasonable price, does anyone know if I can just bypass or remove the ballast all together and just use some good quality regular bulbs? The connector that goes into the ballast looks like it would just connect to a regular bulb. I know it wont look as nice but will it work?

If I remember correctly, the headlights use a 35-watt wiring system. So I mean, it will work, but it won't be as bright as convetional halogen headlights would be, which are 55 watts.

Also, I'm not sure if they make halogen bulbs with the D2R base. As far as I know, D2R is only for HIDs. But I might be wrong.

He means he wants to plug in the connector that connects to the ballast into a headlight, which I've never heard of before. This would be bypassing the ballast all together, and I just don't see how this will work. You will spend as much converting the car to halogen as you would repairing the HIDs, and have much less performance.

Yeah, I understood what he meant.

What he wants to do is the opposite of an HID conversion on our fog lights.

Cut the existing wiring harness, and connect them to the ballast. Then connect the ballast to the bulb and that's all there is to it. What he wants to do is the opposite of it. He wants to bypass the ballast and use halogen bulbs.

It's possible, but like I said already, he would have to redo the harnesses most likely, and find D2R base halogen bulbs which I've never seen before. Perhaps I just never looked into those specifically, but I've never seen them.

There's a member in the For Sale section selling two ballasts out of a 2G TL. The wiring should be the same. I would recommend picking those up.

Yeah they don't make D2R based halogens. There was a guy on here not long ago who bought a TL then discovered the lighting had been converted to halogens, but the bulb wouldn't hardly stay in the socket.

I remember that. Wasn't the car for his girlfriend or something, and the TL had halogens? Talk about some bullshit.

When I bought my TL used, one of the first things I did before the test drive was turn on the HIDs to make sure all was okay with them. I can't imagine buying a car that always has HIDs and coming across the one that had been converted.

Thanks, I was actualy thinking of splicing some regular connectors to the wire instead of the D2r connectocs. I know there are no halogens with d2r base. but if i use regular connectors attached to the wire that would normally go to the ballast wouldnt that work? I know its 35 watts after the ballast but before isnt it 55?

Thats exactly what i want to do, I was thinking of just splicing the connector pre-ballast and attach a regular haolgen connector and use a regular bulb in the housing, Im sure with little modification I can get the bulb to fit. I guess I am jus being cheap but I just dished out money for a new bulb and it wasnt even the bulb that was out, but thats my fault.

I'm not sure what all this conversion would entail. The HIDs are 35w and regular halogens are 55w.. would a halogen bulb be able to run without exploding off of that much less power? I don't reallyk now how this works. I'm also not sure if the ballast is also the inverter, since HIDs run off of a different current than halogens.

You'll be better served just replacing the ballast.

Well i have read that the ballast is also the inverter.I think i will test the output using a tester and see what the wattage is. What about these aftermarket ballasts, are they all the same? I saw one on gohid.com for 75 bucks, thats not too bad a price.

You'd have to see if it's compatible with the TL.
