Bad Bearings or Something Else?

Car: 2000 3.2 TL 109k

Symptoms: Humming/Buzzing sound from the left side of the vehicle (could be front or back) that changes tone and volume with acceleration/deceleration.

Additionally, when driving past traffic/wall/object on left side a clicking sound is heard (I'm assuming through bouncing off these objects) that can't be heard otherwise

Thoughts: I jacked the car up to check both the front left and rear left tires and didn't feel any play. The only sound heard was a light scrubbing sound as the rear left tire was rotated.

I have read that if the bearing is bad, the sound will go away or change upon turning but this does not seem to be the case.

Is it my bearings going bad or perhaps the initial sounds of a rusting exhaust (still original exhaust on there)?

Was planning on a drive of a few hundred miles today but thought twice after reading some bearing horror stories.

Thanks for the input.

Do you think it would be okay to drive to a location that's about an hour away today before replacing them tomorrow?

Sometimes the rotor backing plates warp and rub on the rotor causing a grinding or ticking noise. Check the backing plates by feeling for a vibration when you're spinning the wheel. If this turns out to be your problem, leaving it for now will not hurt the car. See my earlier posting for some tips on how to correct.

Let us know what you find.
