Airbag Deployed at 5-10MPH!
I hit someone from the back at about 5-10MPH and both the driver and passenger airbags deployed. Is this normal? The accident was my fault but is there something I can do about this as it shouldnt have been deployed at this speed? I cant afford to replace the airbags!
Heres two images of the damages:
What do you guys think I should do?

well the nose is where a few of the impact sensors are located
if they decided you could be injured- the bags will deploy
the good news: if you have full coverage insurance- that might total the car due to bag cost!
the bad news: if not fully covered- you can drive it without airbags--we survived decades without them....
spend 200 bucks attending `track day driver school` so you can go around accidents --not into them,,and the bags wont be needed!!

be really careful with used airbags--quality- exact match etc
Im sure there are stories on the internet on buying them,,not something filled with newspaper and old tennis shoes
seatbelts are what save your life- use them!!,,
then airbags are just there to break your nose~

That looks like a modified pumper on that truck and it could be illegal, so its only 50% of your fault if the modified pumper is 4" longer than the rear of that vehicle, and if it was not part of the orginal pumper, reflectors are required. Diff. States have diff laws.

wonder if utility type vehicles have special rules on that bumper issue?
doesnt look like a regular pick up truck

01tl4tl - Thanks for the tips!
acutee - I tried googling about what you said but couldnt find anything. I doubt they have any restrictions for that here in VA.
Walfunk - Thanks for the link but unfortunately my car is a 2000.
I still have warranty on my transmission replacement till 05/11. Do you guys think this accident will void my warranty? I think my car has been having transmission problems way before the accident but I never got the chance to do a diagnostic at the dealership. And I still havnt replaced my airbags! I cut off the airbags and taped up the leather so I dont know if its a good idea to go into the dealership with the car like that. What do you guys think? Should I replace the airbags/modules before I take it in for a diag?
Thanks for your replies!

trans is covered as long as you dont register the car as salvage/totaled
techs dont care about your airbags, they are looking at whatever job you brought it in for
what exactly was the trans doing?

the recall on airbag inflator is to slow the inflation speed down to reduce potential injury iirc
it effects more than 02s,, and has a low rate of customers coming in for it
everyone needs to be registered with acura care to get those notices, and can ck your cars status for all recalls there too

Well I've seen a lot of problems that I THINK is from the transmission. The first problem is it does a lot of jerking back and forth when I let go of the gas. This happens at speeds around 10mph - 45mph. I cant really remember if it does any jerking at lower speeds than 10mph or highway speeds but for some reason anytime I let go of the gas at those speeds, it jerks back and forth. The second problem I have is when I slowly press the gas pedal to speed up it gets stuck at around 25mph - 45mph sometimes so I am forced to press the gas pedal a lot harder for the car to go faster. The third problem I have is when I start the car in the morning and I dont let it warm up and press the gas, it hesitates back before going forward. Even if I let it warm up a little, it still does it. And sometimes it feels like the front left side of the car is going over small speed bumps even though the road is perfectly flat when I dont warm it up. The last problem is the excessive knocking from the front left of the car which I'm told is common for some Acura models and isnt a problem.
There are more problems but I just cant remember them right now. I hope you understand my descriptions of the problems and I'm hoping you have an answer for them.
Thanks for your help!

have you ckd all the front suspension parts and motor mounts
some of that sounds trans related
any actual slipping- revving of rpm when hard on it in 2nd?

Cool I didnt know that. Thanks!

you've got issues that are not transmission related and if you drive in SS mode then it's going to be jerky at those speeds and to a degree even in D5 especially if your hitting the timing of when the lock-up of the converter is happening. but you better get that left front checked out and pay attention to the half shaft, CV joints and wheel bearing. have you look at the condition of the motor mounts?
Also I don't agree with the tool that thinks the shop isn't going to care about the airbags going off when you take it in for warrenty work, they sure as hell will be concern and they will pick-up that they are taped back together too and guess what happens next? it's not covered by warrenty. why? They can't rule out that the wreck didn't cause the issue so who's fault is it then? the guy that can't drive and got into a wreck or the tec that repaired it monthes ago? and guess who wins by default the dealer does and you lose.

I've had no notice of this recall and am registered on MyAcura.com.
Perhaps it doesn't apply, but I'd like to know if it does. Is there a link to the recall notice/TSB?

Thought about this yesterday (Had a 7 1/2 hour drive. You can think of a LOT of things in 7 1/2 hours).
A tip/observation for any of our younger and/or less experienced drivers.
When you're following a car, you can often see through it's windsheild and anticipate what is happening in front of the car that's in front of you. You might see brake lights ahead or a light changing to yellow.
When following a car it's also easier to over or around them.
BUT when following a truck or an SUV, you can't easily see through or over or around them. And because of that you can't anticipate events as quickly.
Therefore you really MUST increase your follow distance when behind a truck/SUV.
I can't tell you the number of times I've been a little too close to a truck approaching a red light and could NOT see the light until I was almost under it. Not good. Learn from my mistakes.
(fwiw - not directed at the OP, per se.)

Sorry for the late reply, I've been sick for the past few days.
01tl4tl - I know nothing about cars and dont know how to check the suspension but ill do some googling and hopefully find out how. Im not sure about the motor mounts but the transmission mounts were replaced when the transmission was replaced by the dealer. I had the transmission replaced because of the slipping that was covered under the recall and now its not doing any slipping at all.
rcb2000 - If the problem is not the transmission then I dont mind taking it to the dealer for a diagnostic because the warranty is about to expire soon. Do you think the transmission rebuild replaced by the dealer would actually fail in less than a year? I hope not.
Bearcat94 - Thanks for the tips! But whats even harder to avoid is when the truck slams on the brakes and you dont have enough distance to stop. Im just thankful things didnt end up any worse than they did because I could have easily totaled my car. This is a lesson I've learned from.
