If you are using "Auto", it is using the compressor to regulate the climate control system, so yes, you are right.
I only use Auto in the summer when it's hot. Every little bit of gas savings helps, especially since we require premium fuel. Most of the time, I use the fan and I adjust the temp control manually to avoid the A/C compressor coming on. It's not as accurate, but gets the job done. Also, when you hit the defroster button, I believe the AC kicks on as well to remove moisture and that gets rid of fogging on the windows.
