99TL code P0480

I read a little about this code and it said that it could be the cat or the O2 sensors.

If it were the O2 sensors, wouldn't I get an O2 sensor code also?

Is there a way to check the cat to see if it needs replacing?

Can anyone recommend an economical bolt on after market cat that I could afford and install myself?

Thanks.

I have the same code on my 99tl. It also shudders at low rpm and when trying to accelerate. The check engine and maintenance required lights are both on. have you had any luck with yours. I have had people tell me it could be and injector, the cat, o2 sensor, or timing belt.

That code is usually the cat. You could try replacing the rear o2 sensor and see if that fixes it OR bring the car in and let a mechanic test the cat.

the rear O2 sensor is to constantly ck the cat is working right
there is an electrical meter test you can do on those for function, but they are getting on in age so failure not unreasonable

muffler shops do a cat inspection test of internal pressure and temp- for free!!!
they have to -by law- documant type of failure or reason for replacement for the govt.

Parts stores (except California) are allowed to ck the CEL codes,, for free!!
report back with those- they are clues

for good cat replacements ck our sponsor Excelerate www.excelerateperformance.com for the site or on our black market section
call or PM Josh for personal assistance

for O2 sensor get Denso at parts store- it was OE and is correct `plug and play` unit
reset ECU by removing CLOCK fuse on passenger end of dash -after repairs

That's sort of what I want to do. But how can they test a cat?

I don't believe my problem is O2 sensors, I replaced them about a year ago and the code for them said O2 sensor.

I recently cleaned my EGR passages, replaced the EGR and seafoamed the car, could any of this have caused the error? Or hurt the cat?

no

muffler shops test cat with an infrared temp guage and drilling a small hole to install a pressure/flow guage,,
they weld the hole up if all is well

you can bang on it with a rubber mallet- not a hammer!
if it rattles its broken and now toast
or it can make no noise and be plugged solid inside

Man I thought I was in the clear. The CEL went out and stayed out for 2 tanks of gas.

Then came back on last night.

I've got until Nov for emmisions, but it doesn't seem to perform as well with the CEL on.

Anyone know of a good shop north of Atlanta?
