99 3.2TL dies while driving, security light flashes

Hey everyone,

My buddy just bought a 99 3.2TL and a few days after he bought it, it suddenly started cutting of on him at random times while he's driving!!! He said the security light flashes like it has something to do with the factory alarm cutting off the car. I thought ya'll would know if anyone does. Anyone ever heard of this? And if so, what's the fix??

Thanks.

Tell him to replace the ignition switch. Search the forum....I just replaced mine a few months ago.

It's simple.

I did a search, but I must have searched the wrong things. What would be best to search for to get this subject to pop up?

Whoops, I just realized this should be in Problems and Fixes. If a MOD could move this for me, that would be great.

First, Your buddy needs to find out if the car has had the ignition switch recall done on the car.
He can find out by registering at acura.com under owners link. It will tell if its been done or not. If not thats a good place to start.

Yeah, I searched that.

It seems like it could be the ignition switch, but since the security light flashes I'm wondering if it's something to with the alarm. For instance NSXNEXT, a moderator on this board wrote this about his car:

Check this:

When the car cuts out, does the radio and air work but not the windows & turn signals?

If so it is without a doubt the ignition switch. Mine did the same thing. Turns out my problem was my alarm was cutting power to the ignition switch.

It basically behaves the same way as if you turned the key to position 1 (the first click after you put the key in).

Try removing all keys off the key ring, and try a different key and see if it still does it. If it does its possible its the immobilizer. Its a easy unit to replace.

I would be willing to bet money that is the ignition switch.

My issue was with an aftermarket alarm (Clifford Intelliguard 9000) not the stock immobilizer system.

So you think it's the ignition system from what I've said?

Yeah replace the ignition switch. It's a relatively cheap fix.

He's tried multiple keys and it's the only one on the ring at the time so I guess I'll tell him to swap out the ignition switch.

Ignition Switch

I just had my ignition switch replaced Wed 4/4/07. Called Acura and they said it was recalled, so tell him to call any Acura dealer and they should replace it!

Not yet. He has a guy who does side work that happens to work at our local acura dealership who is going to work on it for him.
