4-speed tranny question
4-speed tranny question
Ok, I have a 99 tl 4-speed auto tranny with 88k on it. I've never had a problem with it yet. Are they better than the 5-speed auto tranny's, or do they have the same problem? I do remember a couple times flooring my car in manual shift, and after chirping the tires when hitting second gear as soon as I go to hit third gear it wouldnt shift. I had to slap it over in Neutral and then back in Drive then it shifted for me. But that has only happened a handful of times.
Based on Consumer Reports' owner based surveys, the four speed automatics in the 1999 TL are more reliable than the 5 speed automatics used in the 2000-2003 TLs. But they still have a "worse than average" reliability rating. The 2000-2003 TL transmissions have a "much worse than average" rating.
But, FWIW, the original four speed transmission in my 1999 TL made it to 173,000 miles.

my 99 has 139k on the original trannys and still works fine, it's not perfect by any means. it does clunk into gear during 4th to 2nd downshifts and slips a little, but no abnormal sounds, smells, discoloration of tranny fluid or anything like that. I have I/H/E/P/S and few other engine mods and the car hauls ass and I run it hard. I am not concerned that the tranny will die before 150k.
I beat the holy hell out of my car, and am now on the 3rd transmission in my '99. However, the last replacement was at 99,000 miles, just before the extended warranty went buh-bye, and am now at almost 150,000 and am getting nothing but love from her.
Shame tho, the sensativity of these transmissions are the single only thing that ever kept me from supercharging this car.
