Unhappy 3.2 TL-S Horrible Gas Mileage

Just wondering if anyone on here is getting 400 miles or better to a tank? I've had my 03 TL Type-S for about 6 months now (94K Miles) and have replaced plugs, air filter, tranny fluid(4 3x3's) Tranny filter. Running AMSOIL 5W-20 full synthetic oil, replaced timing belt, pulleys, tensioners.... I can get about 350 miles out of a full tank of gas (93 octane)... Air pressure in tires are 32psi and are new...

I drive the car 65-85mph, I am not hard on acceleration and i use cruise control... Any help is appreciated.

Mpg

my 2003 tls, 223,000 miles, stock, well maintained car averages 27.988245 mpg with a 30/70 combination city/highway driving, (352.4 mi. 12.591 gal.) At a 10/90 city /highway combination, (127.3 mi. 3.567 gal.) driving in a "conservative" manner between 64 and 67 mph yesterday, yielded 35.688253 mpg. It would appear, all things being equal, your average speed may be a factor resulting in lower than expected mpg. Try a run, keeping your speed at or below 70 mph and you should see a very noticeable improvement.

I wouldn't call 350 miles on a tank "horrible". I range from just over 300 if I've been in stop and go traffic all week to 400 if all I do is highway. If I drive to the coast it's almost exactly 200 miles one way, with one a handful of the miles not freeway/highway. Fuel light will come on at around 380-390.

Oh also, I would up the psi to 34 front/rear. I do notice a little higher mpg that way. I really think 32 is too low.

I guess y'all are right... I was just comparing it to my Lexus. Frank, I will try keeping it below 70 on my trip to Florida next month and see what I get. I'm also running fuel injector cleaning through this tank to see if that will help any.

Thanks again for the input.

Horrible... you call that horrible? I've been trying to figure out why my car won't go past 250 miles on a full tank of gas... I always use 93 octane... I have an AV6 transmission but I was under the impression that gas consumption shouldn't be sacrificed on this transmission...

I've owned the car since May and I drive around the suburbs of Northern VA; mostly stop and go, but really my round trip commute work/home is 20 miles... nevertheless, I am only getting 16-17 mpg... I wouldn't say I am stuck in traffic, but I am also light on the pedal... It annoys me that I am not even hitting the estimated EPA number of 19mpg city...

Maybe I should try to put 34psi on my tires and see if that will improve anything...

I know that stop and go kills the fuel mileage on these cars... I drive country roads out here and it's hard to keep it under 75+. Have you checked your plugs and filters? I've upped mine to 34psi so we'll see what happens.

24 city and 30mpgs hwy here....
Perhaps you should say what is your driving style? often quick take offs kills MPGs and 85mph is killer to hwy MPGs.. If you want the absolute best is around 70-75mph for maximum hwy MPGs.

I drive mostly on stop/go suburban traffic. Not heavy on the pedal, nor take a quick take off. No spirited driving either. Right now my tank is almost 1/4 empty and I've driven at least 210 miles, which I consider a first... since my last fill, I've been using the SS and early shifting when the ECU permits which I think is helping the better consumption... but still, should I be doing SS all the time to at least get into the 18's?

Do you mean 1/4 full?

I will guess you will get worse gas mileage using SS. The computer will always be on top of upshifting when necessary, IMO. You should easily get upper 20's MPG on the freeway. My commute has a lot of stop and go and I'm usually at 170-180 miles at half tank.

How is your engine running? Is it low on power at all? Is it possible the timing belt is off a tooth (I had a shop do this to another car of mine one time)? Valves way out of adjustment? Clogged catalytic converter? Are there any codes set?

You can get an OBDII reader on Amazon for like $20, hook it up to Torque on your phone and watch instantaneous and average MPG as you drive. This might give you a better idea of whether it's something in particular bringing the mileage down or if it's just way low across the board. The app usually says I'm getting about 30mpg on freeway driving.
