Question 2003 TL (S-Type) Gearshift not moving unless pushing release button(to right of Gear)

Hello 2003 Acura TL S-Type Guru's ///

I am currently having to use a screwdriver to push down the little button ( under the cover to the right of the gear shift ) and the the Gear shift will then release to any gear)

I have less than 30k miles on ( yes she is used gently of the last 12 years to and from work and a little highway )

So I am wondering what behavior you were experiencing prior to replacing the KeySwitch, or is this brake related, solenoid ? Also is there a specific directions for this replacement...

Any specific insight would be helpful as I don't want to get taken by a dealer if something I can do my self( as I just got laid-off and really can't afford a big mechanic bil) ... thanks all for your support Have a great day!

Could be the brake light switch. Do your brake lights work?

If not, here's a DIY to fix

only a few things cause that to happen
As noted above ANY of the brake lights not working- all not working?
that will cause it, even the center mounted light counts

Or failure of the brake light switch itself at the pedal will cause it
The idea behind system is so you don't drive off without brake lights
That switch can also be loose and out of position!
any Brake LAMP light on the dash- that means a bulb is out

dealer NOT needed for this repair,,or any!

Excellent information. Didn't know that a burned out bulb could do the same thing. And what to look for.

ck the switch at brake pedal pivot- by your feet
One for cruise disconnect -the other for brake lights, may be combined into 1 switch iirc
