DIY Brake Switch

I'm not sure of the actual name I just got the part no. from Fsttyms1 and went and pick one up from Acura for about 48 bucks. The problem I was having is when I depressed the brake my brake lights didn't come on and my parking lock would not release. So I couldn't shift from park without using the manual release near the shifter. Didn't see a DIY for this so I did one.
Here is the part I bought.

Then I took this screw out to take the bottom panel from under the steering wheel.

Here is the Bad switch.

Loosen this nut to screw the switch out. Believe me don't try to loosen the other one. It dose not move. I know, I tried.

Now take the connector off before you turn the hell out of the wire.

Now take the good switch and screw it in till the black part of the switch is being depressed by the brake. Then tighten the nut you used to loosen it and reconnect the connector and your done. Back to normal BABY!!!

Make sure to have a friend stand behind the car and tell you when the brake lights come on as you push the pedal.
There is a range of adjustment provided by the 2 nuts and you want them to come on as soon as you get on the brakes, not halfway to locked!

If you are wanting to outfox and outbrake the competition on the track, adjust so lights come on late

DIY to the rescue......

All done! nice and easy. Thanks again.

interesting factoid..

called the local Honda shop gave them the part number and they said it was 44.12 sounded good to me. But for the heck of it i figured I would call the Acura dealer 3 miles down the road from the Honda dealer to see how much more they wanted for it. ( might as well have some fun). Called and my jaw just about hit the floor they were 9 dollars cheaper than the Honda shop. ?

Anyways. It is an easy fix.

Love Forums! Gonna change the clutch in my 99 Vette this spring with DIY with the Corvette forum.

P.S.
fsttyms1 sorry about the Packers! They are my 2nd favorite team. I love Farve!

Go Patriots!

Sorry, but What else would you use? Get the proper tools. You might be able to use a small crescent wrench.

Would this also cause the brake fuse to blow often if the brake switch is bad?

Lately the car has been blowing the brake fuse and when that happens the shifter will lock and no brake lights. Replace the fuse then the car is fine for a day or so but will blow again. Im stumped.

It might, have you checked the wiring by the tail lights to see if something is bad or grounding out?

Checked the wiring in the back, looked fine and even changed the bulbs and inspected the sockets. Everything looks fine. Its never been rear ended so all wiring is still same as factory. This is on an 02 RL though. Brake fuse will blow when the brake is pressed at startup. So either something is grounding out someplace or its the brake switch...

Guess I will change the brake switch and see what happens from there. Great thread btw.

Awesome DIY! My only question is, how do you remove the connector from the switch? I've tried everything but just can't seem to get it off.

This DIY was great! Thanks!

I had been using the manual override at first not realizing what was going on and when i researched the problem I realized my brake lights weren't working either, so that made me hurry up and fix the issue.

Picked up the part from a local parts store (it was about 5 bucks cheaper than the dealers) Took about 10 minutes, just don't forget that the one outside nut doesn't move and its the switch/sensor that turns.

Hey, Did you find what was the problem with your Acura TL? I had the same problem with my brake light, and stop fuse is gone several times

I really appreciate if you could let me know what was the problem in your Acura?

Hello,
Thank you.
Yes I did, It looks ok.
Is it possible that the problem came from brake switch?

So my Brake lights don't work and I can't shift out of park without releasing the gate shifter, but my cruise control does work? Why? This is for a 2000 TL.
