2003 TL Problem

Hey Guys,

So my girlfriend just got a 2003 TL with a 143,000 miles from a used car lot. Everything works great on the car and it looks reallt clean! She got a good deal on it . So here is whats going on...So i test drove the car and the tranny felt really good and everything seem to check out.... Less then 40 miles of driving it the same night she got it the CHECK ENGINE and TCS came on at the same time....Now i have SEARCH here on Acurazine and the info i have seen is that it could be the EGR or a Dirtty Manafold?? So with that being said i took the car back to the dealership and told them what happen and showed the pictures of what happen as i was driving the car. So i dropped off the car at the dealership this past Monday 1/21/13 went to pick it up on 1/22/13 so they told me that it was the tranny. So i took the car home and i will have to talk to them to see what happends now....So as i drove the car home the tranny feels good!! and it does not slip or do anything out of place, But when i went to put it in R from P it does jerk a little and if you go from N into R it still jerks a little but thats it.

So my question is....Is the tranny messed up???

This could be something like motor mounts as far as the clunking goes but you need to get the codes read to be sure. I see you're in Cali so autozone can't scan it for you. Best option is to go to Harbor Freight and get a code scanner there to do it. They're cheap and work fine. Get the codes and post your results so we can offer more help to you.

The trans must have been abused and what not which caused the check engine to go off. Best option is get a different trans or get an 06-07 accord trans

40 miles of driving the same night as buying......would lead me right back to the place ya bought the car from. They would of had to of known of the problem and should be willing to help ya with this. Now if it was a couple of months or a a few thousand miles later, that would change the scenario......depending if a warranty was offered.

Exactly and the longer you wait the harder it will be to get anything done.

So i went to the dealership last night and had a long talk with the guy who sold my girl that TL. Told Him either i get my money back or fix this tranny problem or give me another TL. He said "well i cant fix the TL" and the 2 other TL that he had on the lot had been sold so he had no choice but to give me my money back!! Im happy that i got the money back and dont have to deal with that tranny problem! bye bye TL!!

Thanks everyone for all the help!!

How much did you pay for that TL? My point is due to the known issue, you get the best bang of the bucks for the car. If the price is right, less the tranny, it is not bad to get the fully loaded car and deal with the tranny.

That is good I didn't think they would cooperate so easily. However if you bought it from te dealer they probably knew there was a problem and just reset the ecu and let someone buy it.

Im glad they did cooperate. I think they knew that something was wrong and just wanted to sell the car "as is"

Yeah I agree with Acutee, these cars often are sold below book.....due to their age and known high repair costs for the tranny and such. When ya have to invest $3000 into a $3000>$7000 car, people will tend to shy away.

But your point is right on, especially if ya know going into the deal that you're going to have to spend additional money on repairs. Great cars, but without a warranty or knowing the history, buyer beware !

In R2D's case, the car was for his girlfriend.....probably looking for a nice troublefree ride, not really wanting to mess with tranny issues.

If not for the tranny this would be a great car.
If I knew then what I know now, I might go looking for one of these cars with a blown tranny and buy it, then take my time to swap in the 06-07 Accord tranny.
You see, I had given my uber reliable Toyota Avalon to my girlfriend only 4 weeks prior to my tranny blowing. So buying one of these cars with a crapped out tranny when you don't yet need it to be your daily driver doesn't seem like a bad idea. BTW, I have enough tools and mechanical apptitude to do the swap myself when time isn't an issue .
