1999 TL TRANSMISSION failed @ 200K
My 1999 TL's original transmission seem to failed at 200K. It slips at 2nd gear. 1, 3 and 4 are fine. But having problem switching to 2, especially when the engine is cold. Once it warms up, it is not that bad. I also got the Check Engine and TCS lights ON, since the transmission acting weird.
Can this be other minor issue related to transmission?
And I just learned that transmission is around $1700+$500 labor.
I cannot figure out what to do.
1-Does it worth to pay around 2K for a 200K car? Actually the car is not very bad shape other than transmission. Few fender bender that is it.
2-If I will try to sell like this, how much I can get ?
3-I also love driving stick shift. A stick shift conversion, is it possible? I am in western PA region. Anyone doing the conversion around here? How much it will cost?
Thank you.

i would recommend a junk yard tranny in this case. Yeah you dont know what your gonna get but your cars value has deprecieated and you are thinking about getting rid of it. I would call every where, try spitz in irwin i bought an car engine from them before. where at in western pa????
I also researched the 6 speed swap and it is more expensive then a replacement, but very tempting

i figured the search for a tranny for a tl would be a tall order. iv been down a simlar road before calling junk yards. just go threw the phone book. Try ohio if your willing to travel, also i have a tranny guy in mckeesport that is very crediable and cheap perhaps you can call him for a quote. Nelson's Trannsmissions
A 6 speed swap for a CL is gonna be a bitch, you need sensors, a cl computer, clutch, and other crap> i believe the costs would be greater than a replacment tranny

Always Working In
I am having those same problems gurayuner. Have you changed the fluids on a schedule? Per the service manual it says a flare on 2nd gear is a problem with valve c solenoid. Out with the family but when I get home I'll post the page. Merry Christmas!

I just cleaned my solenoids on the top of the tranny. The screens were not dirty but after cleaning the solenoid out with a can of throttle body cleaner (some dirt behind the screens came out) the tranny shifts a little smoother. Let me know if you need help. I'll give you my number and can tell you exactly what's involved. It's a tight space but with the right rachet and extentions you can do it easily. You disconnect the wire running to the solenoid and unbolt it. 3 bolts.

it started to act totally weird, so I guess it failed totally. I can still drive with the 1st gear, and once it warms up, I can do 2-3 from time to time, but not stable at all.
So I guess, I needs a new transmission. Now, I am trying to find a transmission.
Do you guys have any idea about the price range for part and labor?
And whether it is gonna be OK once it is replaced, or whether it may not be very reliable?
Thanks.

All depends on where you get it from or who does the rebuild. Most of the chain shops arent the most reliable. Call around your local trans shops and get quotes, they will probably range from 1500-3k.
