1999 TL Problem
1999 TL Problem
My 1999 TL starts runs for awhile and then completely shuts down, no lights of any kind on the dash, just the key in the ignition warning signal. When you turn the key to start, the engine turns over but will not run. After waiting a couple of minutes, the engine will start and run for a few more minutes and quit again. It is not overheating, at least according to the dash gauge. It seems like the entire engine electrical system shuts down. Any ideas/

99s are known for bad ignition switch back- the electrical part that makes everything else work
parts store or dealer,
see diy section for install help
dealer did once under recall, then its on the owner for the next few that fail

If you have not already had the battery and wire connections checked, start there. Try a known good battery or recharge yours and get the car to a parts store or mechanic, to do a complete test of your car's electrical charging system. That will tell you if your alternator is functioning and that the battery is holding a charge under load. It will also show any drain due to a short.
I have a 99TL and i am also having the same issue. car sometimes turns over but will not start. It also shuts completely off while driving(all dashboard gauges and lights shuts down simutaneously) radio still plays while this happens. May fire right back up sometimes and sometimes it may take a while. Starting to hear noises inside steering column during cranking that sound like wires have a shortage. I'm believing that it is the ignition switch going bad. Called the dealership and found out that the switch on this car had already been replaced before and a new one would run me at least 500 bucks. I am trying to make sure that this is the problem before buying a new one. If anyone has a solution please keep me informed.
go to any parts store and buy the part for 50 bucks
install help in our diy section- easy because its been done before!
not 400 worth of labor!!
expect failure of unit replaced under recall--with the same garbage part
go aftermarket and buy better quality
