03 TL sometimes rough downshifts
03 TL sometimes rough downshifts
my 2003 tl has about 55k miles on it and lately I started notice engine braking when traveling at 40 or 20mph. this doesn't always happen but sometimes and it just feels like the car is braking forcing me to change to tiptronic mode and upshift 1 gear. this doesn't happen in tiptronic mode at all. however when I push the car on the highway and shift from 3rd to 4th gear at high rpms car jerks. I'm not sure the engine braking is due to downshiftig or not but this car used to be silky smooht at any speed. I have heard bad things bout the tranny in the tl but back then when it was recalled my dealership had it checked and found no need for replacing it. I also recentlly had the transmission fluid changed at Acura. I was wondering wether I should be worried and if I can do anything to fix this issue? thx

the recall has nothing to do with the main failure problem of clutch packs in 2nd and 3rd gear get low oil flow and not enough cooling, disintegrate, and clog the TQ and system
what the dealer meant on the recall was a boroscope inspection showed no heat damage had occured to 2nd gear shaft
so they installed an external `oil jet kit` and sent you on your way
If there had been certain heat damage you would have gotten a free replacement transmission on the spot
take it back to acura and ask if the head tech can take a ride with you
Talk to the Service MANAGER and remind them it was in a week ago for trans oil service and now its doing this weird thing
Bad things often happen after a fluid change--thats our trans!!
The tech will be able to say if it needs a trans or to go in for real diagnosis/documenting failure
they drive these cars every day--and know what goes wrong, have specific test drive procedures they do to stress the trans, so if its bad it will show it
Are you are part of the extended warranty VINs?, or because you just had it in their shop- Goodwill warranty is approved and you get a replacement trans

I doubt I have any warranty led this car is 7 years old and I agree with your suggestions but I'm scared of costs and that sounds expensive. so far this car has not been too reliable after only 50k miles I have experienced so many problems and have spent so much on repairs. I feel like just giving up and getting rid of the car.
ok you are not aware of the court ordered special extended warranty for us!!
7 year PLUS 9 months from date of first sale
or 109k miles- whatever happens first
there was a midyear cutoff by VIN to settle the case- cars after that only have normal warranty BUT- they know it wasnt a fix
you just had the dealer do a trans fluid service, and the trans acts up now
This is common and why they get Goodwill- means no or very very low cost to you,, with only 50k on the miles- thats worth 100 percent coverage
you can call the service dept with cars VIN- they can get info from the system.
or look it up yourself online
or call 1-800 382 2238x 5 and ask them-acura care center
need cars VIN for any of those
certainly worth your time if it means a fresh trans--even if you decide to sell
as long as the car is not salvage title-make a call

I would definitely ask the dealer/call Acura about a "goodwill" repair. With your mileage, you're good for at least parts.
My dad had the local Honda dealer do that for the 2002 Odyssey we have at our house and Honda paid for parts and a rental car. We paid labor, and it came out to $600.88. The van had 64,000 miles at the time and had just had the transmission fluid changed at a different Honda dealer.
