02 tl type-s electrical problem
Couple days ago battery died cause of lights left on, but then got a jump start and car started running fine. The altenator charging at 14.50 volts. When I turn on the lights on even low beam, corner lights are not on and rear taillights are not on either. Also the dash lights are not on. Turn signals work, and brake lights work and reverse lights.
I found out the fuse under the hood was shot(15A - small light) marked on the panel. So I changed it, as soon as i turned the low beam on fuse blew again. I know there is a short somewhere. I also have changed the front corners and rear taillights bulbs. Can any body help me? I cant drive at night cause of risk of being pulled over. My regular and high beams work too.

ok so you installed new bulbs on the corners and you get what?
where did that blown fuse say it goes to?
The TL HATES being jumped from dead !!
and then the alt charging the battery from dead- it was never meant to do that and may fail in the process-
have system retested at parts store now and see what the batt and alt read
ck all wires near or attached to battery- when power was left on it sent hot electricity thru a wire set until batt was dead'
On a past car Ive had headlight wires burn right thru in that situation

I had those bulbs sitting around for a while now, so when this happened, I went ahead and installed them. The blown fuse is from under the hood fuse box and it is just label 15A small light, I'm not sure what that means. So your saying to get it retested, ill do that tomorrow. So you think it might be the battery? I do have a system in the car, with a digital cap. But I didn't have the system up, it was the lights that killed it. Lol ... I can a pic of where the fuse is that keeps blowning. I also checked the wires around there and headlights area and looks fine. I'm not good @ this electric stuff.
yes get it retested as a running unit
and follow the wires from the blown fuse
trace it and find where the plastic cover has melted and allows a short to a metal part = blown fuse
maybe the power wire to your system was On and generated heat to corner light wire--strange things happen when the lights are left on- massive heat does occur

I went to a shop to test the battery and alternator, and see why the fuse kept on blown out. Everything is fine. The guy at the shop told me it was the headlight relay that is no good. He swap the relays under the hood fuse box and all my exteroir lights are on, just the dash lights are not on. I am looking to buy the relay but can't seem to find any on the internet. Is there a websight where i can buy one?
Thanks
Thanks

anyways the first minute or so for the alternator is fine, but then you basically just start overheating the alternator internally, due to it still trying to put out, it's full charging rate

ok fries- I was trying to avoid you countering with- not ALL cars have a problem with it- the xx yzm manual says its ok to...so I went safe with stating `the TL`
but you are correct- all cars hate it
the alternator is designed to work a little effort at a time, all the time.
to replace electricity used to operate the starter, and ongoing need for all the engine electronics and lighting amps demand on the battery
make it work overtime by charging a dead battery - it will put out max power,,for a little while--then now,, or soon,, or not far down the road,,alternator is toast
Most common thing in battery failures- takes the alt with it

My original alternator is still alive, and I had it once charge completely discharged battery (after I forgot my keys in the ignition with all lights on). If you do it once in a while its OK, just shutdown all other electronics such as AC/lights/seat heaters and etc. Was I supposed to buy new battery or buy battery charger for that? Don't think so...

another good one, are like 1990's Subaru, when they never turn off there headlights (because they are switched with the ignition), and the alternator has issues at about 150-175k (mainly the lights dim when at idle, and get brighter as soon as you touch the gas, still bad though), which then needs replacement (easy one to do though)
but then if they do turn off the lights on a regular basis, it the alternator can last the life of the car easily
; just that extra constant load takes it outMy original alternator is still alive, and I had it once charge completely discharged battery (after I forgot my keys in the ignition with all lights on). Just received my relay today, it was not in stock so I waited bout 2 weeks, well I put the relay in and now the dash lights dont come on when I turn the switch to low beam or high. The tranny indicator(p,r,n d1, etc...), milage numbers and dimmer shut off. I did check fuses and are ok. Is there any way to check to see what could be the problem. At night I can't see how fast I'm going.
Thank
Thank
going to have to revive this thread as i'm having similar issues -- with one additional fuse blowing when i turn my low beams on.
are relays available locally? kragen/autozone?
