Get a MK5 GTI
08+, those are more reliable than the others, and if you can get the TSI engine which im not sure if its 08+ or 08.5+, no timing belt and i believe its more reliable. And I would get a manual if you are worried about reliability, just one less thing to go wrong

only vw worth getting is the MK6 2010 GTI, red double stitching everywhere, seats that hug you, ipod rdy, nav, comes lower than stock golfs, and has a TSI. My buddy has that car as a winter beater and its a fun car to drive, handles great. He brought it up to the track with me once and first run he ran 14.4 BONE stock on 91 octane, lowest he got that day.
The VR6 has its fair share of common problems too
MAF
coilpack
timing chains (specifically the upper rail guide)
'95 vrs had hydrolic lifters casuing lifter tick sometimes
secondary airpump
