Pic Request - LED Tail Lights

Howdy all!

I've heard tales that there are people selling LED tail lights for the 2G TL in Japan, and I know some people are working on their own mods, so I'm curious to see how they look.

Search turned up a few results but I just wanted to see if there was anything else:

https://acurazine.com/forums/showpos...56&postcount=1

I've also seen some of OntarioTLs early work, but can't seem to find the pics right now.

Thanks!

Hot damn that looks sexy.

Link to the auction? Wonder how much it costs and how much it'd cost to ship to Canada

Any reason in particular?

I mean, I know the stock tail lights already kinda split up the light to sort of make it look like an LED, but if done properly I don't see why an LED conversion can't be superior.

Of course I'd have to see some pictures (preferrably videos) of it done on the car before I'd ever consider getting 'em... especially all the way from Japan.

won't be too great in the day time.. when sun shines on it.. and the amount of money you have to pay + the shipping to get a set over here is useless.. might as well use that money and buy a front lip and side skirts

Well I agree the price might be too high, but I'd still be interested in just finding out how much it would be.

As for a lip kit, nah... not for my current TL. I'll get the A-Spec next year and it'll already have a kit on it

EDIT.

On the subject of daytime visibility, as a lot of other cars use LED tail lights and those are easily visible during the day, what leads you to believe they wouldn't work out? Are you just referring to these particular ones from Japan? Or LED tails in general?

its an already ended auctions

http://page9.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/k55503402

looking at about 400 US, plus shipping to get them over here, plus finding someone to actually get them for you in japan. There are a few people who do this sort of thing but usualy comes with fees involved. My guess is i could probably get them over here for about 500 including all fees/shipping etc. These aren't the best led tails i have seen on the auction site though, i wish i bookmarked the ones i saw a while ago, very very good quality and the price was much higher.

Heh, thanks.

They certainly do look nice at least in the dark. Really too bad there aren't any LED tails you can buy for our cars in North America... at least there aren't any as far as I know.

I have no doubt that there's people who can do it... I just don't know how much they'd charge and how it might look... yet. I just wanted to see how LED tails look in general on our cars to see if it's even worth bothering to try and get it done.

This is exactly what I want mine to look like when all finished..simple design and it fills up the entire lens area. Amber LED turn signals too...not to worried about the back up lights..they can stay single bulb

so whats wrong with the oem taillights that would make this worth it?
the only people that really need this are the ones who tint their taillights and not as much light gets through anymore.

Nothing's wrong with the OEM tail lights... just like nothing's wrong with a ton of other things that people decide to mod. It's just something to look different and unique.

Now from what I can tell, the lens material of the TL tail lights takes the single bulb lightsource and refracts it to give it a relatively clean checkered look. My guess is any LED mod that was installed behind those same lenses is going to run into all sorts of problems. So how easy would it be to get lenses that wouldn't refract in this manner and allow the actual LEDs to shine through as they should? I suppose that's a necessary first step in any mod like this.

Nope, the light refraction is due to the angled chrome pieces in the housing, not the lense. This would not affect the leds, it acually would make it easier to line them all up straight.

Ahh, interesting. I've never seen an opened up tail light, so I was just guessing there

Well... anyways to answer the question of why LED tail lights? Personally I think they just make the car look less generic. The factory lights just give you that even spread of tiny squares when ya look at 'em and it is nice, but I think a properly spread set of LED lights would not only make the car look more modern but like I said, a LOT less generic.

Of course if there's no commercially available options available to us here in North America, then I suppose there's little to no chance of me ever going with 'em. I'm too cheap to order 'em from overseas and I doubt I'd ever have the skill and talent to do 'em myself, hehe.

Ah well.. still got many months until the new car... someone make 'em!

... and sell 'em!!!!!!!!!!!!!

.... TO MEEEEEE!!!!!!

I cant wait to see the outcome. The ovals have always looked a bit awkward to me.

ask L3wD, I haven't touched my tails since I bought the car.

But i think its the same process as taking apart the headlights except its harder and you cant use the sealant again.

yea same process as headlight, except it was harder OntarioTL cracked one lens i believe and I warped a lens (good thing I bought a tester tail), the sealant seemed tougher. I think theres 1 small star screw holding it together

However i did use the original sealant and no condensation from what i can see.

I'll try to do a DIY when I redo it.. but dont hold me to that, i might forget

Hey L3wd did you get new rims?

Anyways thats exactly right about removal of the plastic lens, the same as the headlight, but the plastic is more brittle since it doesn't need to take the impact of stone chips and debris.

Now as for the comment of the daylight will drown out the leds. Not the case with my mod. Actually they are pretty bright, I'd have to say brighter than regular tails. A year and a half later no one has rear ended me. I think my lights actually get their attention even in fog. And to top it off, none of my LED's have died. So change in weather didnt effect them which is a good thing. Maybe I'll take a movie of them running and post later.

I have thought about revisiting modding a newer set, but I would have to sell what I have now and trade for another set of tails. I have a few ideas, but for now thats on the back burner. I still have to complete the DIY for the cluster mod, promised a friend I would convert his Chrysler 300M Special to Blue LEDs since the interior is green (yuck) even the displays are green which I finally found a good combo to change them to blue...oh and do his tails as well.

Alright, I needed to get some fresh air as I've been sick lately. I decided to try out my old digital camera video feature. It sucks...but this is what I got for video.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MEL2Uwgg_fA

I included one with my projector headlights with led signals I built for them then a walkthrough to the rear of the car again. Sorry for the crappy vids...wish I kept that HDV camera I bought for my nieces wedding. OH and that racket you hear in this video is not from my car. It was someone working on their Ford bronco...it sounded like it needed to be put down

Did you use a module to control the turn signal lights? Some honda/acura's need a module to control the resistance between the LED's and the power source.

I have been building some tails and headlights as well to get ready to make some kits. I'll keep up to date.
