Vtec ?

Ok, I have a 99 tl I/H/E. Here is my question. The Vtec selenoid has a clip with wires running to it, obviously to make it work. Now, When I unclip it I notice no difference, my car runs the same. Now with it on or off it hits its power band at 3700 rpms, is that my cam or vtec. I cant imagine my vtec coming on that early, usually vtec on most cars turns on at like 5000 rpms. So is my vtec not working, or is it just not noticable because like I said with the vtec selenoid wires unplugged my car ran the same (I even timed it 0-60 both ways and they were the same). I am unplugging the vtec selenoid its on the driver side of the motor kinda up front.

On the '99 TL the VTEC kicks in at 3800RPM's, I believe, could be wrong however.

I thought I read somewhere that it was higher on the 99-01 for some reason, but I could be wrong. Did you search and find anything?

Wrong! Its not all J32A1. The 99 kicks in much sooner than the 00-03

2ndgentl, if you wanna see if you Vtec is working or not, step on it and since you have a 99 you should hear the engine sound more aggressively around 4k RPM.

Thanks for all your help, it does work at 3700 rpms, I just had in mind that usually they work at 5000 rpms or higher, but it is lower on a 99 tl, the lower the better I think anyways.

Not necessarily. Do that to a 00+ and you lose power. Its all in the tunning and cams.

Dropping it much below what the factory has it at you do. My comment was to his the lower the better. People need to under stand what VTEC is and how it works. Its not some miracle mod that you can just turn on and bam there is more power

If anyone is interested in changing the Vtec engagement point get a AFc Neo and you can change it up or down and see what works best and at what rpm engagement point you get the most power. I'm sure there are plenty of people on here that have done that. AFC NEO will be my next engine mod.

And those who have them got gains not from changing the VTEC engagement point but actual optimizing of other things.
