TYPE S Gauges
TYPE S Gauges
Has anyone tried here attempted to transplant the TYPE-S gauge cluster into the 99-01 TLs? Im curious if you could just switch the guts, and basically just swap faces from two clusters....? And at the same time do the LED swaps to a nice blue.
Anyway - whos got some knowledge?
Thanks~

Try using the search feature: Type S Gauge Swap
I have searched... Those all talk about the actual use of the cluster as a whole - the temp doesnt read right, shift light crap, blah blah - cant find anything about taring them apart for a face retro. Just looking to get opinions before jumping in head first and possibly blasting $100 in waste
sure you can swap the faces, but then you have to recalibrate the gauges. and you have to be very careful when pulling off and putting on the needles, you can damage the parts easily
because you asked... I figured since this was my only documentation of this project (4 years ago) I'd update it with working links to pics...

soooo - the 02-03 S-gauges are pretty much a plug and play with the 2000 and up TLPs
I got a set this weekend - there awesome! Only problem I have to take care of asap is the milage reading. The dealer is going to charge a pretty penny to fix that. Also your TCS light will not work when you disengage it from the button, the 02-03s had the VSA in its place, but the TCS still works!!! Just not light conformation. I never use it anyhow sooo... what ever. The heat gauge functions fine....... All the stuff about it shooting up past high and stuff doesnt seem to be a factor. And the swap was soooo quick and simple... 10 minutes TOPS! Hot new gauges for me! I would like to do an LED retro into these puppies, that would be sweet ass! But for now - GO GET A SET! Maybe you can find one with your same miles and not even worry about the change.

Pic is kinda blurry but you get teh idea (they looked much better in person) they did all sorts of cool color changing from aqua to blue face would light up or wouldnt numbers would light up or wouldnt and could be dimmed inbetwen

Hey benny, any of the Type-S guage-lights stay on for any wierd reason, like VSA or anything? Not that it would be a problem, i'd just unplug the bulb, but still curious.

Though - it does seem the gas gauge reads a little off. When I filled my tank the needle went a good 1/16 - 1/8 of a tank higher than full. Normally it goes just under the 1/16 of extra looking gas. And my fuel light came on the same amount above the empty line. But, in a few tanks of gas, that will be no biggy too, just get used to it. Really small amount, and maybe yours wont - you know? Love them though!!!
Its really too bad those group buy gauges are no more.... Those looked like they were probably awesome! Im sure if a set popped up somewhere for sale it would be taken for a good couple penny's!

I just want it to show my actual mileage, i don't want to adjust it or anything...
I guess I could just swap the LCD's like in the DIY...I'm confused though, can't I take the guage faces from the type-s and put them in my 01 TLP guage?

Once you start mixing parts, this is where the nightmare will begin...
the LCD does NOT house the mileage, it's just a display. The mileage is on the 01 TLP cluster circuit board. To retain the mileage, you'll need to retain the circuit board or have the Type S board reprogrammed by an authorized odometer shop...

I was going to do a swap with just the Tach and Speedo and call it good! Thats a mere swap and go! All the dirty work is in the SCREEN and the Heat/Fuel gauge... Although at this point I am wondering if the 00-01 TLP circuit board is more close in relation to the 02-03 TL-S than the 99 TLP was to the 02-03 TLS...
But to answer the quesiton - for sure the TACH and SPEEDO are swapable! And Im wondering about the HEAT gauge, this quick and easy would 2 gauge swap would negate having to do any reconfiguring of the odometer.
I would go ahead and get ahold of a 02-03 S-gauge set and do it up - either way, your gonna end up much prettier than you started!!!
Well I have TYPE-S guage in my 99TL-P Right now an only problem that i see IS
1. VSA stay ON (no biggie)
2. Temp needle is alway on H (I did fix that but some get go back to H)
3. My miles are lower the my TL-P guage ( Soon or later the Gauage TYPE-S will caught up)
Beside all that the guage work GREAT

I SPELL GAUGES ALL Wrong
The 99 TLP has a terrible LCD which was updated from 00-03. When I first did a PnP swap of my 02 TL-S cluster and 99 TLP cluster, I mentioned in my DIY that everything worked except the fuel and Temp.
The gauges are different in construction (temp / fuel) so just swapping the gauges will require some modifications as indicated in my DIY.
If you have an 00-01 or 02-03 cluster you MAY be able to PnP. Likely if you have a matching year car. Once your years do not match, all bets are off and I can't confirm any of the combinations other than...
99 TLP -> 02 TL-S = Temp and Fuel do not work (can't remember the specifics, check the DIY)
00-01 TLP -> 02 TL-S = Temp and Fuel do not work (can't remember but someone contacted me about this a few years ago)
02-03 TLP -> 02 TL-S = ???

I have right now - a set of the 02-03 TLS gauges in my 2000 TLP - they work great! Fuel/Heat is fully funtional - Speed and Tack - all good! Just wanna reroute the TCS light to light up the VSA spot on the TLS display...
so: """"00-01 TLP -> 02 TL-S = Temp and Fuel do not work (can't remember but someone contacted me about this a few years ago)"""" - not true
Unless I have 03 gauges and the 02's dont work, but that wouldnt make any sense.

But even the first two would look nice. I had thoughts of just doing my SPEED before I found the whole thing would work with no messin around! I would bet that there is a good chance the heat and fuel are the same too... I know in the retro done here that the TL was a 99 - which is the 4speed auto, different cluster design (technically) - the Pins for the heat/fuel gauges to plug onto are different in the 99 to the 02-03 TLS and Ill bet different than the 2000 TLP.
Go nab a set up and try it out. Its pretty straight forward when you take them a part: Layer by layer, and then gauge by gauge - Put it back together! Check out the link that LITHIUMUS posted on page one - it was his swap on the 99 / 02 TLS gauges - pretty good pics to show the idea here. But his was mad involved with the digital parts, you dont have to do those parts.
Hope that helps.
Thanks guys, I already ordered and received a type s cluster. I've got a 5 wk old and a 2 yr old, so I might get around to ripping out my dash somewhere around summer 09...
I'm thinking they will all swap out, I guess the only thing to be concerned with is the needles
