triptronic steering wheel mod

i was thinking if it was possible to somehow wire two button onto the steering wheel to control the up and down shift for the triptronic. If so, I think that would be a sick mod, shifting without taking your hands off the wheel

the wiring wouldnt be too difficult, but making it look good on your steering wheel would be ......hard as shit.

besides, can you imagine shifting while your steering wheel is turned?

that is why Ferrari has theirs stationary, Unless you have a steering wheel that lock to lock is less than 1 turn you wouldnt want them on the wheel

Unless you want the wires exposed, otherwise not possible because you need to fabricate a new steering wheel contact hub-ring with 2 additional contact grooves to accomodate the up-shift and down-shift command signals.

o dang. what about like a shift pedal on the ground, like where the foot rest is. That would be easier.

What would the point of that be? Just use the SS mode already built in to the shifter. Plus it would be easier to use and allow you to still use both feet for driving

hahaha why woudl you need that anyways man, are you planing to go on some race tracks where you need both hands at the wheel at all times cuz of the massive speeds and crazy turns you will be taking with your TL. hahaha let me guess a HUGE spoiler is the next mod for extra traction on the rear wheels lol

The 07 TL-S AT has paddle shifters...maybe you can use some of that hardware?

paddle shifters on 2Gen's would be cool as hell. That's the only way to go IMO. I bet it's possible to do that on a 2G, but could be a very big project.

i would have to slightly disagree with that, if he makes it stationary we might be on to something, he could run the wires under the pannels that are behind the steering wheel and mount the paddles into that section. instead of having the paddles contact under the steering wheel panels he can add the contacts to the paddle itself and place buttons behind it, not a full paddle effect, but it looks cool....

Yea if only you could get it to actually upshift and downshift much faster and hold first gear on the 5 speeds.

After you've carefully read the very first post of this thread, you would have noticed that the thread originator asked to add 2 shift buttons ON THE STEERING WHEEL. That's why you'll need the new hub-ring. Otherwise you can do the job by simply sticking two shift levels on either size of the steering wheel column without any fuss.

well, i was thinking more of paddle shifters, i just thought to say buttons, because i would already know how to put paddles on them. I still think foot shifters would be light, kinda like a motorcycle or something. just my opinion though. haha, or like butt shifters, just squeeze your left cheek to downshift and the right to upshift

How about voice activated up-shift / down-shift commands ? Then you don't even need hands nor feet nor butt-cheek to do the SportShift shifting.

i dunno if edward is serious, but that would be cool as shit! seems like im just motivating him to try anything, maybe you can route it through bluetooth, if you have an aftermarket stereo that supports it. but you would need software for that as well as a PCB where all your wiring would go.

ive actuall considered doing this mod to use my volume up and volume down button on my steerign wheel because i dont use those at all. but the thought of shifting while turning ruined it for me, maybe i should pull out all those previous drawings and actually make a wiring diagram...

yeah, that would be sick, i only use the sports shift when i am going straight, but for other people, i bet you could wire up like a bypass shift to chose to either use it on the steering wheel or the shift knob, depending on what type of driving you want to do

That's actually not a bad idea, but if I do make it happen it will be either/or. Anyone have a wiring diagram for the 99 tl?

The only bashing i did was for the idea of a pedal mounted shifter, and that really wasnt bashing. I really could have with the stupid idea of a voice activated one though. You need to understand what SS was intended for and the best way of using it. Right now thats the shifter, or if you were to fabricate something like NSXNEXT said and use the RL paddle shifters

One of the sport shifts main intents is to give you the ability to hold a gear around corner and exit fast. Just seems like a lot of work when the shifter is right there IMO.

How close is an RL wheel to a TL? Could you swap steering wheels and do some fancy re-wiring?

Its still an automatic... Ferrari's, Lamborghini's , BMW's, Benz', etc. all have an actual manual transmission with a computer activated clutch. Why spend this much money to do something that will just ruin your tranny (if you down shift at speed, it ruins the tranny). I (and assume any intelligent individual) would rather spend this money to actually convert to a real manual... Just my

Define down shift at a certain speed. The computer in TT mode will not let you down shift. Only when it is safe speed, the you will be able to, until then it will just blink the current gear number notifying you that it can't be done.

If the computer doesn't let you downshift then its not a downshift is it?

Mine is the same way, I have an '03 TL-S.

Basically, say your in 3rd coming into a turn hot and you tap it down the second to lower your speed faster... THAT will ruin your tranny.

With the cost of the airbag and steering wheel, I doubt it would worth it. No clue how much custom wiring would be required.
