Rims hurt Tranny????
#2
false, way false. besides, just because they're bigger doesn't mean they're heavier. the problems with our trannies is a design problem. there's nothing you can do to stop it or speed it up (within reason). it's a roll of the dice really.

Actually Its true to a point. The bigger the rim the more weight that gets pushed outward (unsprung weight). it will make it slower and handle worse (there are exceptionns but not many). But as for hurting the tranny no. the amount of added stress would be null. (and if your worried about it making the TL trannie die faster NO.

I would say that could be entirely true.
If you had a very low offset, say +30, the center point of the wheel would be much further out on the axle putting more stress on them, as well as the suspension, thus potentially putting more stress on the tranny.

i'm still gonna say no to his initial question because i think we're really pushing the limits here. what you're all saying is true about changing stresspoints and increasing torsion on your axles, but you're not going to degrade a tranny on a vehicle by changing wheel size unless it's from obscene weight increase because you added 30lbs on each wheel from putting 25inch rims on them.
how many of you ever seen a car with a busted tranny because a person put on 20s instead of 15s? i know i haven't. and a 15mm offset change isn't going to drastically change the MOI on your control arm and destroy your suspension either. these are *engineered* pieces made to withstand stresses and strains over what the vehicle can provide. if you're suspension and axles were that fragile you would bust something every time you went "curb hopping" or hit a pothole. think about it.
i wouldn't be concerned about larger rims changing your final drive ratio. most people get thinner tires to complement larger rims anyway. of course this is another set of problems on it's own if you live in an area with bad roads.
i'm willing to concede that you guys could be completely right, i just have to say i've never seen any hard evidence to point that way.
