Oh this sucks
Oh this sucks
I have a 99tl, for the past couple of weeks I noticed when shifting into second it just felt different. Sometimes a little harder shifting with more of a delay..........Today, racing a TL-S we took off at a light side by side, as soon as I shifted into second it was bouncing off the rev limiter hesitating to shift, finally as it was slipping it shifted. Now everytime when I shift into second at high RPM's it starts slipping. I have the 1999 4-speed auto original tranny with almost 124,000 miles on it. Now, would it be worth it to put a 6-speed CL-S tranny in it? Because I wouldnt go back to an auto, but how much do you think going to a 6-speed tranny would be, and what all would I need? Also IF I decided to just throw another auto in it, what would that cost? Please send santa my way.
i hope u racing where there where no cars.
Santa is going to search is your friend! there are hella threads about 6 speed swap and what is needed and all that. Another maybe u should be hitting high rpm and u wont have that problem LOL!

So i found a stock 99 tranny for $1239.99 at everdrive.com Someone check it out and tell me if you think thats good. Yeah I looked in to it and swapping a manual is just too expensive. That website is free shipping and they warranty them for 3/36,000. But.......they are used tranny's varing in milage from whichever they find, but they say they are mechenically inspected before selling. Im sad. I've even thought about trading my car in because if you drive it normal it shifts fine, so they wouldnt know.

That's way too much money for a used transmission. You might as well buy a reman tranny for a little more and have some piece of mind. Read this thread as it has a much better deal for you. https://acurazine.com/forums/showthr...d+transmission
EDIT: Here's the actual E-bay listing --> Here

Hey, listen to this..............Let me start the day off from the beginning. Thinking in the past that I overfilled the tranny I took my car to my shop and drained a good quart out of it. Now that the tranny fluid level is proper (in between the two little holes on the dipstick) I decided to go finish my christmas shopping (yeah its been a quart overfull for about 9 months). Here in FL. yesterday was 85 degrees and humid. I must of drove non-stop for like 2 hours in traffic. Then at the last light before turning into my neighborhood an 03 TL-S pulls next to me. So we both take off and as soon as I hit second is when I noticed the huge slip. I freaked out, put it in drive and tried it again, of course it slipped again. So I went home all pissed off.............Two hours later after my car has cooled off I got back in it and tried it again...............it shifted fine. Today I tried it again a couple of times.........It shifts fine. Now, could it be that my tranny for some odd reason just got too hot and caused it to slip yesterday? The only difference that I did was drain a quart out, but its at its proper level....why would it get hot? And yes, I checked it the proper way..........let the car warm up, shut it off and check. Also I am using AMZOIL for my car which should be proper. Another theory now............is it possible that my torque converter could be at fault? Slipping?
..see if Acura will goodwill the tranny replacement, otherwise your stuck with replacing it yourself. If worse comes to worst, most ppl just end up selling the car b/c either its too much hassle/work/money to convert to 6Speed or they simply cannot find a 6Speed tranny. Best of luck to you!

Thanks man, but Im here in Tarpon Springs (near Tampa). What would AAMCO do? I mean can they determine what the problem is? I have been driving it ever since the incident and it hasnt slipped again. It shifts fine now. What happened was the tranny got hot from all the driving I did that day, and it was 1 quart too full of tranny fluid. I already drained it to its proper level, but my question is since it slipped about 3 times when I tried it that day do you think it could be damaged even though it shifts fine now?
Now heres what i want to do in the mean time............Im going to install a tranny cooler, and I want to change the filter thats in the tranny, but I cant find any diagrams or manuals on how to change the filter. With 124,000 miles on it I think the filter should be changed. I just need to know where exactly its located and how to do it.

well it shouldnt be doing that in the first place so theres probably some heat damage, the head mechanic at aamco drives the car around and figures out whats wrong and gives you a quote for free so go ahead and do that if you want, but if they find something else wrong after they open it up they'll charge you for hard parts, like the torque converter etc.
check out this thread and ask about the filters in there cuz i cant answer your question

gfaze is right.. the cooler won't do anything
i would call around to every dealer within 50 miles and try to gain some sympathy.. everyone knows about the tranny problems.. maybe you will get lucky and get some kind of deal..
replacing your ride with another auto tranny is not worth it..

Well, I did install a tranny cooler. I have pics that I'll post but, I did drive it normal before I installed it and checked all around my tranny with my temp. gun to see what the temperature was.........On top of the tranny it was 191 degrees and on the bottom no less than 140. After the installation and driving it all day on top of the tranny it was 176 degrees and on the bottom it was in the 120's. So it makes about a 15 degree difference.............I havent had any slipping since that one day whether the cooler helped it out or not.
