First off, you are very lucky to have such a nice car at 16. It's a very powerful car for a first time driver so be careful. Don't modify it just yet. I say this because you should go over what the car needs maintence wise FIRST. Tell us what the mileage is, and what kind of shape it's in.
As for 17 or 18's thats up to you. I stuck with 17's due to weight issues and not being lowered yet. If you plan on keeping the 17's then the first "mod" should be tires. Then suspension. If you plan on getting different rims then it's the other way around. Use the search feature and you can find all the mods available for this car. Good luck and have fun. Be safe.

at 16 i'd save those mod money for a rainy day. you know, speeding tickets and whatnot.
lip kits can cost a pretty penny, full oem one can run you up to a thousand dollars. power mods, well, the 260 ponies you got stock is more than enough to haul your prom date.
so really, if you're gonna mod it i'd keep the mods to a minimum and save the cash for dates and other things that 16 year olds do. but then again, you're 16 with a tl-s so you prolly got bank haha.
if that's the case, keep an eye on the black market portion of the forum for old member parts that you can buy for much less than getting them. performance parts is pretty limited compared to pretty much any other other import.
in the looks department you got the wings west and oem lip kit. then the nasty rice boy body kits. give it a drop with some shocks/springs and a good set of rims and you're all set.
19s will look best, but will require body work to make it fit without rubbing, unless you're not dropped, but that's gross. the extra unsprung weight of 19s will slow you down but if you dont plan on racing it's fine
18s look great too

When you decide on what you really want in terms of performance vs looks, then let us know as there are pros and cons and no perfect option.
On the performance side you need to decide if you are wanting better handling or better 0-60mph / 1/4 mile results.
For handling the wider the tire the more lateral grip, but you need to make sure you get the offset right or your tires will extend out past the fenders.
For 0-60 & 1/4 mile performance you'll want a lighter tire and wheel, so typically the 17" tires and wheels will be the lightest.
If you really don't care, 18"s tend to be a good balance, so when you're ready search the Tires, Wheels & Suspension Threads for lots of good info.
Enjoy and don't go crazy with it

the most important mod you can do to the car is fix the nut behind the wheel~
Look up local road race tracks near you- attend a 1 day High Performace Driving School, about $250 thru various car clubs that rent racetracks.
You get a professional race driver riding as your passenger, giving immediate fedback and corrections in braking-apexing and exiting each corner
Each lap and each session you get smoother and faster, smooooth is what you want to learn most! The TL has plenty of power for now in your learning curve, get better brakes and some skills~
At the track- you are running full throttle out of each turn and max braking effort needed for each entry point---20-25 minutes solid at a time of full on driving
You will come away a different person and different type of driver
Dont need to speed on the roads- where a few minutes of mild fun will cost as much as a full day of fun on the racetrack
Best part- is some of the racer/instructors are also police officers- hiway patrol- and they will wave you past them while going 90mph on the straight -as you hit 120 and sail by

My TL didnt become "mine" until i was 18, though i learned to drive on it. I had to buy it off my dad - which took me a long time while also proving i was a very safe driver. The good thing is, that my TL has been in my family since we got it brand new back in 2002, and it has always been garaged. So of coarse i cant complain for working so much for it.
if i were you, i would wait a little bit before modding the piss out it. get a cold air intake or at least remove the resonator and do simple things for now.
o and please search around these forms - there is a search button. many many photos of TL's for ya too here. Dont beat your TL - its not worth doing, take care of it please.
keep an eye on ur tranny too and don't go with andyautosport ever.
