Maximizing Air flow
Maximizing Air flow
Hey guys, I have a 2000 Tl and it just got its 80,000 mile tune up. they say everythings working perfectly and the only problem was that i had blown out a couple of engine mounts but now everythings running great. the only modifcation of any kind was removing the stock resonator from the bumper, which helped a little, but not much. the only problem with the car is that ive traded paint with others on a few occasions (some were my fault but others weren't) and that could use some fixing. anyways, I'm going to be getting a job soon so i'll actually get enough money to make a few changes to help both its performancs and its looks.
But for performance i understand the easiest way to go is to get a UR pulley and increase all the airflow you can to the engine. so that becomes what? isn't the best way cold air intake, headers, downpipe or something? high flow cat and larger exhaust with better mufflers. isn't that kinda the best thing to do if you dont want to supercharge? And also, how much would all this cost, even with labor? ive never been there when the work was paid for so i dont know what the labor costs would be. thanks for helping a newb

Depending on how much you want to mod your car, there are a few other things you can do to increase the air flow.
1) Ram-Air set up. This is a fairly inexpensive mod and fairly straight forward. It all depends on which CAI setup you go with. I have Comptech Icebox and have lowered the airhorn so that it sticks out the bottom of the wheel well. I'll see if I can get some pics uploaded. I've been running this set up for years without any problems as long as you use common sense and don't go racing in the rain. I drive it in the rain all the time.
2) Bored out TB and intake. I sent my TBs to Kings Motorsports to have them bored out and cleaned up. This is a bit more expensive, $150 for the TB and if you have a TypeS, then you need to have the TCM bored out as well, and that's another $175. As for the intake, I did the intake opening and the other intake components myself.
Then end result is that this car loves the extra air. I've not had the opportunity to run it at the track, but I can tell you the difference was very noticable. Mostly because with this mod you will gain HP throughout more of the power band than you will with headers.
